Question Thumping in my system after fresh HDD install.

I have just installed my new Hard Drive, Western Digital Black 2TB. I can hear the odd thumping every couple of seconds. I'm sure it is the HDD as I have never heard this sound before. Even when I installed it, it did not make this noise only until I created a new value for the drive for it to be recognised by my system.

Is this a normal things for installing new HDDs. I really does sound like a light tab on your window but on repeat every 5 seconds or so.

Hard drives are not silent, it could be the heads loading and unloading, or just the head seek motor. The noise could be amplified by a case resonance.

You could check the S.M.A.R.T data to see if there is anything amiss, but it is probably nothing to worry about.

It might be worth investigating further though, some HDDs are a bit over-aggressive with ramp loading, so they constantly load/unload when the OS accesses the drive periodically.

Does it happen constantly, even when the system is left alone for a few minutes?

If it's nothing unusual then it might help to adjust AAM settings on the drive to make the seeks less sharp, though it might slightly reduce performance and that's probably a reason you bought a Black drive in the first place. Alternatively, soft-mounting the drive might help - as peterb said, the coupling to the case can seriously amplify HDD noise.

I just received a new PC that was custom built by AVA Direct. I have a WD 2TB Black which I use for Steam and games only. This drive does the same exact thing for me as well. It's usually quiet until I start up Steam and access the drive. Then it goes into it's thumping mode. It's really irritating. I was thinking that it might be bouncing around or vibrating in the case but it's secured in the drive tray. The drive trays in my case are a very snug fit as well.

Agree with the setting mods. Slight performance sacrifice in order to make it audibly reasonable.

Or "soft mount" using either various enclosures (5.25" to 3.5") or home made, mostly rubberised solutions. Google can help a lot.
