SSD High AMount of Writes....

I've had my 250GB Crucial MX200 for a couple of months now (M.2 version) and I've noticed the SMART info is showing 1TB worth of writes to the drive (using Crucial Storage Executive software). The only thing I've had on the drive is a single installation of Windows 10, The Witcher 3 and Battlefield 4 (I've not even played BF4 since it's been on the SSD)..... I still have over 100GB of free space on the drive. How has it managed to write 1TB of data to the drive in just a couple of months?? It also shows power up time as 46 hours, but I have over 72 hours worth of play time alone on the Witcher 3 which is on the SSD!

Something doesn't seem right...

Maybe the SMART stats include the erase cycles / write amplification?

Even if the drive only lasts for 80TB that's still over 13 years of use at 1TB every two months. And those official figures tend to be very conservative, tests have shown similar SSDs can last for 800TB before conking out.

Whether they're accurate, or lower as you expect, it's not something I'd worry about.

See what's being written. Don't guess.

Filter for "operation" containing "write", and "path" containing the path you're botherered about, i.e. "C:\". Set Filter->Drop Filtered Events so you don't run out of pagefile.

Leave it running for however long is necessary (hours? a day?) then stop it and go to Tools->File Summary and sort by bytes written.

Thanks, I'm currently running "SSDReady" in the background. I'm also doing a full scan with Windows Defender and it's writing to the SSD! I thought it would just scan files (read them).... It's quarter of the way through the scan and has already written 9GB to the drive. I'll try the tool in your link too.


Edit: Tried the tool in the link and couldn't figure it out.

The Windows Defender scan has completed and SSDReady has reported 13.4GB total writes and 32.76GB read. Surely Windows Defender is read only unless it's updating or removing viruses/malware?
