Check postage from Newegg, can add a lot to the cost.

According to the database in the link that I posted t'other day:
"DT01ACAxxx (7200RPM, 64MB cache, SATA-600 interface)
DT01ACA150 1.5TB (2/3)
DT01ACA200/HDS723020BLE640 2TB (2/4)
DT01ACA300/HDS723030BLE640 3TB (3/6)
Note: Designed and manufactured by Hitachi's Deskstar design team. Early batches of these units identify with Hitachi-style model numbers and have the Hitachi logo (in addition to the Toshiba logo) on their labels. These were presumably to be released by Hitachi under a "Deskstar 7K3000.B" umbrella that never came to be."
So has a chance of being a good 'un (not really a Tosh).

I've never had a problem with Toshiba branded drives, although most of the ones I've used have been 2.5"

A bit off-topic but I recently found that Deskstar drives are still being made and sold under the HGST brand: https://www.hgst.com/products/hard-d...top-drive-kits
It's a shame HDDs really don't get much mainstream attention nowadays with SSDs grabbing all the headlines.
With them having a UK site I didn't realise they ship from the US! Thanks for pointing that out.
So it's a Seagate st3000dm001 for £73 from ebuyer, or a Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB for £65.94 plus £5.48 shipping from Scan for me then probably.

3tb seems to be a sweet spot for price and I feel like I want a 7200rpm drive.
As you have over the required 20 posts, you may qualify for the Scan free shipping offer

I had forgotten about Scan free shipping, thanks!
I'm not sure about Seagate being a bad make. It's not fair to say that after one batch that failed prematurely the whole brand is bad! I've always used seagate drives by preference over the past 20+ years and never had a problem with one.
Warranty on the Toshiba is only 2 years, but on the Seagate it is a pitiful 1 year. So, if it dies after 13 months of ownership, then in Seagate's eyes it hasn't failed. If they don't trust it, I won't trust it.
Edit to add: If the Tosh was largely designed when HGST was a part of Hitachi, then it may be worth remembering that Hitachi is a limited company with no shareholders to appease with short term profits and I think that gives a different flavour to the products (albeit also used to make HGST drives way more expensive). I don't know how long that mindset will last at HGST, but for now at least I am more than happy to buy their drives.

Does anyone remember the Hitachi Deskstar / Deathstar drives and the click of death?

I do, but it was 15 years ago and when they bought the brand from IBM.
Hitachi drives have been my drive of choice for the last 8 years, along with Samsung, and they have been among the quietest and most reliable drives I have ever had.
That said, I do use Seagate for non critical applications and they have been fine, in fact the only drives I have had fail have been WD, but I think they were damaged in transit as they were badly packed. I was able to RMA one, but the other failed a while later, although I had never been quite happy with it. Still, win some lose some.
