    NAS drive for CCTV storage

Looking at getting an IP CCTV setup at home and have been looking mostly at HikVision cameras and NVR kits.

I have also considered getting a NAS drive for pc storage (and to access some 3.5" HDDs that I can't use in my new pc due to space limits).

Is there any particular NAS drive that is more suited to CCTV setup that others? I hear that Sinology are good.

In addition to the above, if you use a NAS for CCTV setup, would you also be able to use it for normal NAS use (using WD Purples)?

Synology would be a good shout, especially when used with surveillance station.

Re: NAS drive for CCTV storage

Would there be any issues if I were to try and use a NAS for both CCTV storage and normal use simultaneously?

I've also looked at some of the bigger NAS drive options with 4 bays but at this point they are in the same price bracket (or more) than a purpose built NVR.

Dropped by a local CCTV specialist and had a few words about kit and completely forgot to ask them about NAS storage.

The price of a gen8 microserver should put it up there with a dedicated NAS for the flexibility alone?

Until you do battle with the onboard RAID controller. Which is about as flexable as viagra

No issue with it myself but it supports AHCI mode as well

While it may be a hacked up intel raid controller you can buy addons for under £30 that work well with HP.

Re: NAS drive for CCTV storage

I would much prefer the streamlined, less hassle/hacking option for the setup.

I am actually looking to get two setups; one for our home and one for my father's shop. The shop one is likely going to have HikVision kit and NVR so as to make it as simple as possible to plug and play.

The home setup is likely to have HikVision cameras again, but I have not fully made my mind up if NVR or NAS for home recording. The only thing that is making think of going NVR is by having similar equipment at both locations, I will (hopefully) more familiar with the settings etc. so as to have less/no compatibility issues and less to teach my father/family to use the equipment.

Going with Micro Servers etc. is good if I didn't have to try and explain things to others that have a limited I.T. knowledge.
