    Re: M.2 ssd

The drive stats seem quite odd to me...
running for ~5000 hours and only turned on 29 times... (Turning on includes waking from sleep)
this sounds like a drive used in a server to me. (I have no idea the impact server workloads might have on SSD life)
For reference my main PC's SSD has 4500 hours on it and has been started up 1200 times!

Also, who uses a drive and writes 600GB of data and only reads 5 GB?

    *After some further research*

It is a server SSD so it's fairly certain that it did come out of a server.

If the total writes is correct then it has a LOT of life left in it!!!
Those drives are apparently rated for 70TBW and if 600GB (0.6TB) is all that's been written then it's still got 99% of it's life left!

Assuming that it's in working order then a relatively unused server drive is probably not a bad deal (Just my opinion)
Those drives normally sell for ~£100 used, so £23 might indicate that it's dead or likely to die soon

I like the look of those M.2 SSDs, but I have an older motherboard - I have seen that you can get adapters that fit into the PCI-E sockets - anyone used one or know if they're any good? Do they affect speeds at all?

The adapter cards should work at the same speed as an M.2 socket, as long as it's in a x4 PCIe slot. The only limitation of such adapter cards that I know is that you might not be able to boot from it; only chipsets from Z97 onwards are able to boot from NVMe SSDs.

Cheers. I'll have to check that out. As the fastest SSD in the system I would want it as the boot drive.

check your motherboard manufacturer for bios updates if you have an older board. I know Asrock have a beta BIOS for the Z77 extreme 4/6 which allows boot from NVMe SSDs in PCIe cards

Ideally the socket should be PCIe 3.0 Standard for an SSD if it's NVMe, but any x4 will do for SATA 3-speed M.2 - on my Z97 board that's the x16 lane.
AIUI a x4 board will fit in any longer slot, so a x4 adapter for an M.2 NVMe can go into the fast lane.

Question: is the above correct, or have I got it wrong?

It depends on the SATA chip on the adapter board, some may only support 2 lanes which would need to be 2.0 to get that last few dozen megabytes per second.
