What are tablets actually good for?

I have never owned a Tablet and I have only ever used a friends iPad for about 10 minutes.

I called up Vodafone to cancel my contract today, I was going to go for a new handset even though there is nothing wrong with my SGS2, anyway they turned around and offered me a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Wifi if I extended my contact another 2 years at the same rate. (I only pay 32 Euro a month)

So basically having never owned one I'm just wondering what they are good for before I decide to accept the deal or not.

Like I say there is nothing wrong with my SGS2 and I am perfectly happy with it I just tend to change every 2 years.

Kalniel really got it in one. I wouldn't be without my iPad these days for browsing the net, email, reading ebooks and magazines, youtube, Airplay, games, etc, etc. Obviously your mileage may vary but I'd be lost without my iPad.

On the face of it that might sound like a great deal, but over the space of 2 years you will be paying £768 total. If you kept your current handset and dropped onto a lower 'sim only' contract it would probably cost you around £12-15. Lets assume the worst case @ 15, over the course of 2 years thats £360 (although i suspect you can get a better deal) so 768-360 = £408 you are paying for the tablet when you can get them for £280 new
    Not that great really!

If there is nothing wrong with your S2, and you dont immediately see a place in your life for a tablet, i would call them up and ask to be put on a rolling lower priced contract with better internet/minutes/texts and save yourself some cash.

Re: What are tablets actually good for?

Sorry I missed out the fact that that's 32 Euro a month not pounds so cheaper than you think, Actualy 25 pounds with exchange

The Tab 2 10.1 Wifi retails for nearly 400 euro in this country so still a good deal

That being said the choice got made for me as soon as my wife got home and found out she insisted that I take the Tab.

£32 per month is way too much!

I'm only paying £22pm for an iPad 2 with Three after I upgraded from my mobile internet.

Even through I hate Apple and everything they stand for, I really do love my tablet, it's so easy to check my emails, Facebook, eBay, Paypal, check Hexsus and other websites and forums with ease anywhere.

    IFR Charts.

Carry two of these back and forth to the airplane:

Contains about a million of these:

    Printed on tissue paper.
We'd also get to sand spend two hours updating every 56 days

Now we use an iPad, clip it to the yoke and I have all the charts in front of me. Updates at the push of a button when in WiFi range.

(we actually have two of them, in case one breaks).

Re: What are tablets actually good for?

The Galaxy Tab 2 is a lot cheaper in the UK, about 200 quid for the 10", 145 for the 7" - you can probably get it shipped to the continent for not much more. There's also a cashback offer from Samsung but dont know if that works outside of the UK and Ire.

In my own experience (I have a 7" Nexus) it much beats a 10" tablet (had a Xoom and girlfriend has a new Ipad) for mobility and book reading - it's much easier to hold in one hand like a book. The screen size is still great for other activities such as browsing and video. I was skeptical at first about the smaller size but once I had a go on my friends Nexus 7 I was sold.

In my opinion they're great for reading comics, download a bunch of Walking Dead .cbz's, whack 'em on there and watch the time fly by. Granted, I've only ever used an iPad for this so I couldn't say how it'll be on other tablets.
