    Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

    Which one should i get?

    main usages are:

    • Photo editing RAW files from my DSLR
    • Web browsing
    • casual gaming like fifa 13 or something similar
    • Social apps - facebook, twitter,gtalk, evernote
    • typing pointless posts like this and/or documents

here are the flaws i see on both devices currently

    win 8 pro surface cons:
    • Lack of RT apps
    • possibly poor battery life
    • hotter/warmer device

    win 8 pro surface pro:
    • proper desktop OS
    • Eevery app on RT is optimised for tablet
    • can connect millions of USB devices without rooting/using special software or cable
    • i5 quad core CPU and more RAM
    • Build quality

    nexus 10 cons:
    • no lightroom alternative App
    • lack of usb connection to directly connect my camera or a ext hdd without rooting, buy special cables or apps
    • No micro sd slot
    • lack of tablet apps

    nexus 10 pros:
    • Price
    • Can sync and use my google account
    • Screen resolution
    • Battery life

Re: Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

Your comparing a Milk Float with a Range Rover.

They do differen't things, and cost is a huge factor.

The Nexus 10 is a silent, lightweight cheap device. The Surface Pro is a heavier more powerful device.

As you mention photography so heavily I'm going to say, you don't want either. This would also explain the confusion around the differences and so the odd comparison.

You want, a ....drum roll please.... ultrabook.

Something like the z830 which can be had for £750 inc vat in core i5 from PCWBD. It would allow you full lightroom, granted with just an i5, but thoroughly usable.

Given your new many megapixel camera, you will be bottlenecked on CPU, if you really wanted it for photography, I'd look at the Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks in Core i7, with a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishload of RAM.

The tablets, the surface are just simply too dog slow to do justice with your high MP camera.

    Between the 2, surface pro.

I agree with Animus though, ultrabook would be much more appropriate by a long way.

Re: Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

You know what I don't see in the pros for either device? Portability. Why so hung up on a tablet?

It looks to me like what you actually want is a high-powered standard laptop, possibly even a 17", plus a cheapish Android tablet - ideally with 3G - for keeping in touch with people and playing casual games on the go. Tablets are great for web surfing and social apps, a proper laptop will be great for photo-editing: but how often are you going to be out on a shoot and not be able to wait until you get home before you start editing and tweaking your photos? The combination won't cost you any more than an ultrabook or a surface pro, but it'll do a much better job of meeting your needs - unless you can some up with a truly compelling reason that you need to take the full power of your editing suite with you everywhere?

EDIT: oh, and, for the record - every app that runs on Win RT will run on Win 8 Pro; RT uses an interpreted runtime that is identical to the one on Pro - the difference being RT cannot run legacy x86 apps.

EDIT2: unless you meant that there aren't many apps available for RT - but that's a bit of a non-issue when you;'ve got a full x86 environment...

yea i mean there aint many apps in the app store for RT/Pro but one things for sure, all apps on the RT app store are made for tablets. same cant be said for android at the moment.

Yes i want it for portability use, when i travel long distances or abroad once or twice a year.
i will check out some ultrabooks

Neither. Put the money towards your house deposit and get a second hand netbook if you need portable computing*

can possibly manage without! make do with carrying loads of CF card bruv! But if i ever get the chance, may opt for the pro or a dedicated ultrabook

Re: Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

the surface pro is almost certainly going to be more expensive and slower than an ultrabook. Given that an ultrabook will struggle to keep up with Lightroom when dealing with the massive raw images from your lusted after toy, I think the Pro would be a bad idea.

Will probably cost you about the same and you shouldn't be compromised for either situation, which i think you possibly would be with the Surface in both counts.

Don't forget to consider the Amazon offerings too, they start at £129 or something very cheap.

Re: Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

The Nexus 10 has the possibility to be an awesome tablet...great specs and looks pretty good. Had mine a couple of months now and still no great tablet apps and the whole tablet crashes quite a few times. So basically great spec tablet but the android software needs a major overhaul :/

Re: Nexus 10 or Surface pro?

love my Nexus 10, but as Joshy quite rightly has pointed out, still a few issues, and no Flickr app as yet, no idea why? Anyways after using it for 3-4 months can quite honestly say that other than viewing photos, wouldnt use it for photographic purposes.

Pretty certain all your needs have been covered elsewhere in this thread, so wont add any more, but would be interested to see what you come up with. Your photography progress has been very interesting to follow on these pages bud

Really, I was saying an ultrabook was needed, the things he want crave RAM and CPU, GPU will help too.....

I would strongly recommend against a iPad, would be the worst option.

I actually agree regarding the laptop option. However, if the OP wants to stick to a tablet hen an iPad meets all the pros and, with the camera USB addon, none of the cons.
