    Degraded Raid 4100+

    Hi all,

I have built a raid 5 array with 5 x 250 seagate drives. Aftyer two days all of a sudden the array becomes degraded. When i reboot the 4100 i get about a 60 second beep, indicating some sort of error. However once the array is booted i get no lights to say that it is indeed degraded. The web interface does say that it is degraded, but not what disk it is.

The disks are brand new so i would doubt it is them.

    So my question is...

If there are no error lights is the array truly degraded?

    Thanks,

    Scott.

    Hello Yvon,

My word that was a fast response! I have indeed over looked that button. The webpage for the config button shows that the first disk is not in the raid array. The raid box is blanked out but the "spare" box is open to be ticked. I would like to add this disk to the array, can i do this by selecting "add spare" at the bottom of the page?

    thanks

    scott.

    Dear Sir,

If we confirmed this HDD is health, we could check the "spare" box to joint this HDD into RAID.

    Hello,

I am getting no signs that the disk is bad on the raid configuration webpage. Should i see a message saying the disk is bad if it indeed is malfunctioning?

If i select the HDD by selecting the "add spare" check box and then click on the "add spare" button beside the "create raid" label will this add the drive as a hot spare or will it add it to the raid array itself?

    Scott.

    Dear Sir,

    1.
We could use the Seatools from Seagate to diagnostic the HDD:

    2.
If we went a HDD joint to RAID, we just need pcik this HDD and click on add spare.

After using the config button on the raid page i clicked on add spare and then add to array. After a few hours of building the array is back to "healthy". Must of somehow kicked it out of the array in the first place.

    Cheers.

Ok well now its dropped out again. After one day of use the same disk has dropped out of the raid and become degraded again.

Yvon, I have submitted a support ticket request about this problem already about 3-4 days ago but have yet to hear anything. Can you please chase this up and reply to the ticket. Ticket number : ZSH-68378-410

Well... after a reboot it allowed me to put the disc back into raid again... so now lets see how long it lasts this time.

Yvon... any help with that ticket number?

As predicted... disk dropped out of the raid array again.

Yvon, your PM states that you want access to my NAS box, what can you find out from logging into it? Unless there is another hidden account on it then you would see the same information as we do.

    Can you explain the difference?

    Wookienz.

    Dear SIr,

It is factory mode to check possible configuration issue remotely, if we can't do this by remotely, another way only send the N4100+ & HDDs back to Thecus HQ for rescue and analysis.

For the sake of continuity... I removed the suspect drive and ran all seagate Seatools tests over it with no errors.
I have placed the drive back into the 4100+ in a different position then last time to see if it is the NAS box. The raid has been rebuilt with the drive added in....i wait with anticipation.

    Re: Degraded Raid 4100+

I ended up buying another drive exactly the same and using it. I has been running for months now with no troubles. Not sure i would buy this model again though. I have managed to get root ssh access however!
