Unhappy Seek Error Rate is increasing - N5200PRO

    I use N5200PRO with Firmware Version 2.00.04 .

Sometimes the access to N5200PRO is very slow by CIFS.
So I checked Storage > Disks Information > Status > SMART INFO,
    and I got informations.

    For example,
    Tray Number 5
    Model ST3750640NS
    Power On Hours 992 Hours
    Temperature Celsius 44
    Reallocated Sector Count 0
    Current Pending Sector 0
    Raw Read Error Rate 0
    Seek Error Rate 14548434
    Hardware ECC Recovered 214187303

I think the counts of Seek Error Rate and Hardware ECC Recoverd are too much.
Is it no problem? Is this the reason of slow of access?

    Hey Masa,

I've got exactly the same setup as yours and seeing the same thing:

    Tray Number 1
    Model ST3750640NS
    Power On Hours 165 Hours
    Temperature Celsius 42
    Reallocated Sector Count 0
    Current Pending Sector 0
    Raw Read Error Rate 0
    Seek Error Rate 25703312
    Hardware ECC Recovered 2154160

    HDD Batch dates:
    07482
    07483 (x2)
    08135
    (all are Site: WU)

Is anyone else using Seagate 750Gb ES drives?

Re: Seek Error Rate is increasing - N5200PRO

I've had a few Seagates with many seek errors, never in RAID formation, just single drives, and it was always a sign of impending doom. On single drives at least it can indicate any number of things, including damaged actuator, platter surface degradation, etc.

    Raises hand.

I've got a brand new 750 Seagate SATA as part of an array in a brand new Thecus 5200 Pro and I see this:

    Tray Number 1
    Model ST3750330AS
    Power On Hours 43 Hours
    Temperature Celsius 36
    Reallocated Sector Count 5
    Current Pending Sector 0
    Raw Read Error Rate 228247187
    Seek Error Rate 1407842
    Hardware ECC Recovered 228247187

and the various error rates increase every time I refresh the page.

I've already got an RMA from the supplier.

I have similar from a Western Digital 500 gig as well, although not so severe:

    Tray Number 3
    Model WD5000AAKS-00TMA
    Power On Hours 4111 Hours
    Temperature Celsius 43
    Reallocated Sector Count 18
    Current Pending Sector 10
    Raw Read Error Rate 265
    Seek Error Rate 0
    Hardware ECC Recovered N/A

smartctl does not know how to interpret these values correctly. This is not a bug in smart tools but caused by Seagates policy not to provide this information to the public (to sell their own monitoring tools I assume). You can safely ignore these values if they are that high from beginning.

Re: Seek Error Rate is increasing - N5200PRO

I have similar error rates, doesn't seem to be a real problem.
