N5200 Pro - How to exchange PSU Fan?

    hi there

does anyone know how to exchange the psu fan? like every n5200 owner knows that the psu fan is the too loud. I would like to exchange the fan, but need some advise how to make it.

If anyone did that in the past, I would be glad if you can share your information.

    Thanks
    DW

it is too loud, I agree. Do you know, how much it gains, when you put it off?
Oh, excuse me. I do not even understand psu: is it the fan on the backside of that NAS you mean? You can easy reach it by takinng off the cover, loosen the three easy visible screws on the backside (no tools needed) and you can get of the cover and should see anything, what you want to and will soon recognise, how to change.
My experiance is, that the small power supplies, like used in the Thecus, are very loud. Here you can not change anything as easy, because it is that small. A larger fan can be more silently operated.

I considered already to change from Thecus NAS to a selfbuild PC, just taking that larger housing, but therefore with no noise and with a real Raid-Controler. Meanwhile I hardly see any advantage in such a NAS anymore.

    Hi pit234a

The psu fan is the one from the power supply. The bigger fan on the back of the case is not the problem. I think when there will be a possibility to exchange the small psu fan it will reduce the noise extremely.

I've changed the rear and psu fan.
Have yet to find a 40mm with the fan monitoring cable to replace the cpu fan.

Very easy to replace, need a 40x40x20mm fan, though openning the psu will void warranty. In the end it makes a big difference in noise levels.

    MrDerrickC,

I replaced the CPU fan with a SilenX Ixtrema Pro 40x10mm and it still retain the RPM monitoring in the INFO module. For the PSU fan, does it require soldering the new fan or is it a 3 pin connector?

    Thanks.

Ok, i will try with a 40x40x20mm fan. I don't care about avoiding PSU warranty. But when it makes a huge difference it will worth the work and money. :-)

    Thanks a lot!

PS: do I need to know anything special about that? Hints?

    PS2: Which one should I buy: 40x40x20 silent with 3000rpm / 16dba or 6200rpm / 26dba?
