Re: 5200 back up to the connecte esata drive
Unfortunately, rsync is not present on the N5200. This would be my favourite to do backups.
Backup however can mean different things. In case you have just data and want to get a copy of them, that is easy. In case you have an operating system with links and with files and directories that belong to certain users with certain rights, that is a bit tricky and you should be aware to find out, what you want and you should know, that not every file system is capable to keep these rights. Basically, one of the commands cp or tar should serve you and fulfil your needs and they are implemented on the N5200 with busybox and the help function shows details of their usage. Here, http://www.busybox.net/downloads/BusyBox.html , you find a description about busybox, the unix used an the NAS. You need a module installed and activated on the NAS to get connection over ssh and you probably will need a module to invoke scripts at boot time of the NAS and than you would add a cron job to automatically backup your files. Manually, you just enter a command line like cp -RP /source/path /destination/path and you probably have what you want. In case of structured data, like in an operating system, better use tar and generate an image of what you find with links as links and so on. There also is a chance, that the webif used on the NAS generates entries in a crontab-conf file, I don't know. Instead of crontab, you may want using a script that automatically detects your drive on e-sata and starts backup as soon, as the drive is plugged. Also possible with the help of a script that than will be started at boot time and checks for your drive periodically. |
