Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
Hey guys,
what is the wattage power rating on the AC power supply for the N5200B Pro? The manual and the spec pages are a little vague. I am trying to determine which UPS rating i need to pair it with the Thecus. I am looking at the APC SmartUPS 420 SC VA. Can I get away with that or do I need the next higher verios (620 SC VA) in order to avoind overloading the UPS? The Thecus will be the only unit connected to it, btw. Cheers, |

Re: Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
Have a look at your hard drives, they need the biggest part of the power and so it depends dramatically on number and type of hard disks you use in your thecus, what you have to get to the NAS.
Plus, think about the time you want hold power up with UPS. A smaller one is empty way earlier and in case you only have short interrupts, it might be enough to deal with a small UPS, but in case you have to wait hours, you might better want larger capacity. (Disks + 100W) * time should be a safe calculation, but capacitiy and thus time will be reduced after a while of operation, so it might be wise, to take the next larger device. |

Re: Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
Dear Sir,
The power consumption with on each HDD brand & model difference, N5200 without HDD during booting take 39~45W depend on CPU usage, if N5200PRO would take additional 3~5W. According to testing the HDD power comsumption peak at after power up or spin up 2~15 sec, not during operation or reading/wiriting.

Re: Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
Thanks for the replies. I was trying to find out the wattage of the power supply of the N5200B Pro, because that would kind of put an upper boundary on the power rating of the UPS. I am not looking to cover extended periods of power outage, but rather make sure that the NAS is able to shut itself of in an orderly manner in case of blackouts and that it can provide a level of surge and brownout protection.
Any idea on the wattage reading of the N5200B Pro Power supply? Cheers, |

Deaffy, Did you decide on a UPS, I too am looking in to the APS SmartUPS's, just wondered if you found out your power consumption?

Re: Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
I don't know if this is common, but here it is usual to use VA instead of W when output power of a UPS is given. That sounds like nonsense, but the rule is, that Watt is used for something different, than VA (I don't know the English words for that and recommend a search in wikipedia to find the explanation). The consequence is however, that you might not want to buy an UPS with 200VA to serve a 200W power supply that drives up to five hard disks (and has to deliver the power for acceleration in booting or after a wake up of the disks).
I would feel better with at least an estimated factor 1.3, thus about 300VA for the task. (the reason is, because you don't have a value about power consumption in var (one more unit used in this) that would give you an idea about how strong the UPS must be. All this numbers differ by the kind of electronic used and can only be estimated, specially when that electronic is unknown). It might be helpful for you, to calculate one hard drive with about 25W. I don't know for newer drives like SATA, but my elder IDE have less than 20W, when they are running. During start, they need an higher current on the 12V line than usual, but not for long time. Way around, I would mean, you would be unable to buy any UPS that is thought as PC-UPS that could not handle the power, means current, needed by the N5200. As soon as it generates an output voltage that matches your line specifications, it should work and you only have to think about capacity you want to assure operation for a minimum time. |

Re: Which power rating for the N5200B Pro?
I bought a APC Back-UPS CS 650VA.
That proved to be good to run the Thecus and a smaller form factor linux PC (60W Power Supply) and showed about 30% load durint normal operation. I connected it to the Thecus via USB, using the apcupsd package that is available as a communitly module. It was even able to report the status of the UPS via LAN to the other linux device, so that I could triger both the Thecus and my linux box to shut down in case of a power outage. Cheers, Deaffy |
