    N2050 Raid0 Dead - HELP!

    Hi, we have an n2050 in raid0 with WD RE2 400GB x 2.
The 2nd SATA died and we replaced with WD under warranty.

Now we have installed the replacement and it does a LOT of blnking LED's! After some time if we plug the Thecus into our Mac it shows in disk utility with the small config file partition and the drives will show sometimes but never mount.

If we take out the new drive and mount to the mac it shows the one drive grayed out with its correct name (Thecus 400GB Raid HD)

We have 300GB of VERY important data on this drive and we used RAID0 thinking it would keep us out of trouble.

Please help as we are panicking!

    Thanks.

    Thats bad for you.

You should have used RAID 1 (mirroring) and not RAID0 (stripset)
then you have had no trouble.

You should know when a RAID0 System crashes all data were gone.!

    Sorry thats the truth.

you shouldn't of lost any data as that's what mirroring does with RAID 1. It saves a copy of the data onto the spare disk so that if one dies the other automatically takes over. Plugging the replacement in will take a long time to rebuild the RAID (and should be done automatically I think) so I would leave it in overnight. If that doesn't work maybe the RAID controller is faulty.

Hi, yup I know - I think personally the n2050 enclosure is at fault here! Anyone know how they're warranty system works?

    Re: N2050 Raid0 Dead - HELP!

Even if this doesn't help much in your situation, this is the main reason not to trust in RAID as only safety measure too much - the controller itself is always a single point of failure, and a rather bad one, as normally you can never transfer a raid disk set from one controller to just another controller, it won't be compatible if it's nopt the same brand and model. Situation may be better with software raid if it's open source and available for different OS and hardware platforms.

Does anyone know if I can take these two disks and put in another Thecus enclosure so it will read them? (i.e a n2100???)

    Thanks all

    Dear Sir,

If it is RAID1 HDD and format as NTFS or FAT, we could install HDD into PC to accessing data.

    Re: N2050 Raid0 Dead - HELP!

If your n2050 was in mirrored mode (raid 1) and formatted for mac, the solution is to put one of your drive into your mac or into an external sata to usb box and to connect it to your mac. (ex 3.5 Jazz Enermax which is an usb 3.5" box and supports both sata and ide drive).
