    n8800 with 8x1gb in 128K-ZFS

so, i just got our new n8800 (bought at buy.com for 1449.99US$) and because money is tight and i'm not ready to fully trust 1.5tb drives... i setup our n8800 in RAID6 with 8 Seagate ST31000340NS drives with 128kb stripe size and the ZFS file system.

i started around 11:30am PST and its wsaid roughly 400 min to build/format

i don't forsee any problems as these are the enterprise drives and are built for this setup.

i'll post more when i've started xfering files

    Dear Sir,

After building the raid6 in zfs, would it have been possible for you to run the ATTO tool and tell me what is the speed rate you get from it ?

In my n7700 raid6 5x1Tb (WD10EACS-22D 1Tb drives - 16bit cache), zfs , in iscsi mode connected though a gigabit switch to a gigabit ethernet pc, I finally managed to get about 40-50 MB/sec

Though according to http://www.storagereviews.co.uk/?p=36, the managed to get about twice as much (about 80-90MB/sec ) in raid 5 mode.

How much do you manage to get in n8800 with those drives you mention ?

(see more of this thread to http://forums.hexus.net/thecus-care-...rmal-help.html)

I am looking forward to reeceiving your feedback on this

    Re: n8800 with 8x1gb in 128K-ZFS

hi... so, i had to sweitch to RAID5 because RAID6 gave me only 700gb of free space after calculating all my backup needs. i have about 4.8Tb and RAID6 gave ~5.5Tb (not enough growth room).

but i ran the atto test and have the following:

    redclawkefar,

This are still pretty slow in related to the storage reviews benchmarks!!

The only problem into switching to raid 5 is that you can just handle only one disc failure!

Even in raid10, your data may survive with 2 discs failures of from the the two different chains.
Though if 2 discs fail within the same chain, you lose data.

The only type that can handle 2 disc failures, no matter whcih chain is raid 6.
Though it seems that the performance is quite low in comparison!!

Yvon, would it have been possible to provide the users with a complete benchmark sheet, so that they decice which case is better and with what transfer speed results ?

    Dear Sir,

I will try to get the performance testing about N8800, and following N7700 peformance testing for your reference first:
