Unhappy Plasma screen - repair or replace?

    Hi there

I bought a cheap but cheerful 50" LG plasma in December and enjoyed it for around 2.5 months. Unfortunately the stand was crap and I propped it up making it crapper and didn't get around to putting it on a wall. The inevitable happened, it fell forwards one night and the screen is cracked

Now just to note this is the actual screen not any glass cover (too cheap TV) so it's really gone. I was reading recently that a repair would cost more then then (£455!) TV itself - also LG won't sell the part to end users. I just wanted to ask you knowledgable folk if this is really true? I'm completely out of pocket?

Anyway let this be a lesson for you people that

    1) crap stands are dangerous
    2) cheap LG plasma screens closely resemble mirrors in practise.

    cheers

I cant quite fathom how any stand supplied with any TV could be so bad that removing it and hoping it will stand up on its own would be better.....?

Re: Plasma screen - repair or replace?

    Haha!

I didn't remove it - it was too low so I propped it up (badly). To be fair if it was just the TV and it's stand it wouldn't have fallen at all. Expensive lesson learnt that day.

If the screen has gone, then yes, it's new TV time. You can't repair it, only replace it.

Re: Plasma screen - repair or replace?

not something you can really do as it has ageing calculations, power levels calibrated during assembly, and of course the parts costing more than the TV.

Also yeah, it's a new TV time, getting it repaired costs more or equal or just slightly less then a new TV and all you doing is wasting money at a old TV.

Re: Plasma screen - repair or replace?

Dell currently has the 50PA4500 (720p) @ $550 or 50PA5500 (1080p) @ $600 so thats probably your best choice and cheapest alternative atm ; unless you can find the 50" Samsung equivalate (720p) onsale at times for about $400-450 .

I have the PA6500 and find the stand adequate , but could be improved . Your also not going to get any plasma with a non-reflective screen in the above price range from any manufacturer without paying about double the price . All newer plasmas are now single pane glass , not double pane as in the old days , partly due to the newer tech of plasma and to keep costs and wieght down .
