Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

And the deal they offered me for an upgrade is really quite fair.

As some of you know, I'm a tight barstard when it comes to my mobile phone spending.

So £30 upfront, 12 months, £20 pcm. Total cost of phone and contract £270, including data txts and enough calls that I seldom go over it.

Now whilst its not a dual core, or more importantly imsnho an ultra high res screen, I think its fair to say this is obviously the best deal on the market right now. WP7.5 doesn't need high end hardware, it runs merrily on the <1ghz devices.

Thats tempting. I have a sim only deal with them at the moment but if they offered that to me, I would accept it.

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

So received it this morning just been installing it and running updates.

So far its the classic WP7 experiance, that is to say smooth in every respect, however its not really any faster than my old Omnia7. I think the Mhz speed game is currently winning in the marchitecture stakes. I don't think I need the phone to have these 1.4ghz speeds. There I said it. Its bad code/design that is leading this charge, and it really isn't needed.

I will say I think the flash is the biggest bottleneck, some of the really good games (Such as Fusion Sentient) take quite a while to load up, the speed difference between the omnia7 and the lumia 800 is marginal.

As such I'll stop talking about software, if your happy with the limitations of the closed eco system, its great. It does everything I need, I like the SDK which as a programmer is important.

So the hardware, it feels heaver than some, but not heavy, it is still lighter than an iPhone 4 with the bumper case on it (I don't know anyone who doesn't use one).

The polycarbonite has a great feal, and the signal strength is amazing, on Wifi and network. I'm able to pick up the bt openzone thingie with almost full bars, whilst the iPhone 4 keeps dropping out. Good engineering there.

Its quite thick in a way, I'm in two minds about this, one it spoils the line of ones suit, two I don't care its still effing tiny.

The screen is bold and bright, but for web browsing still suffers compared to the ultra high res of some of the competition.

Its amoled and looks like its pentapixel but a well hidden one, however given the awesome contrast, I don't mind. However if you don't own a kindle, it could piss you off if you want to buy the phone primarly as a reading device rather than a erm, smartphone.

Battery life and the like I can't really comment on yet.

The top connector cover just looks like a liability, after using it twice now I think its OK so long as your sober, we'll see what happens the first time I try to charge it drunk.

But given the price I think I'm suitably impressed, its got a great feel to it.

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

played a little bit with the nokia maps app, rather handy feature. Its got equivalents available on every platform lets be honest about that, but one of this quality is likely to cost £30-50. If its the kind of thing you'd want to use, it really helps the proposition.

I will re-iterate again how little performance difference the extra CPU grunt makes, but thats because WP7 has a great habbit of just not hanging!

I might try and do a side by side of running something demanding with the old Omnia7 and the Lumia 800. It will hopefully demonstrate how much little difference this stupid game of clock speed makes.

I am not really sure what the extra features nokia will be adding, will HDMI out make a difference? Probably not, will FM transmitter make a difference?

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

Just buy one Zak, so long as you get one of the good offers (ie no more than £300) you will be stoked with it, there is NOTHING that comes close at this price point. My only real complaint, resolution when web browsing.

Its a great piece of kit that is still growing on me

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

Well I spoke to Tmobile and it turns out that the rolling sim only contract they put me on at the end of my last contract is actually a 12 month contact and therefore I can not upgrade until March 2012.

I'm tempted to see if I can get it sim free (ebay most likely) like I did with the optimus 7 or end my contract and cover that cost by selling/trading in the optimus 7.

How many free minutes of talk time am I getting on that contract? In all honesty I'm not sure, must be at least 200.

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

nice lil review there. I'm thinking on holding back on buying the on tmobile contract. I might wait a while until they bring out the blue tmobile nokia lumia. As i've heard atm that they only have the black one. I know i'm a sucker for unique ultra bright colours i can't help it ^^

Yes apparently the bright colours are coming in the next 2-3 months.

I've already dropped the phone whilst changing the spark plugs on our rally car. It survived fine, but has a little tiny scratch, but guess what, its solid black benith! Nice. The metal plate by the camera is a scratch magnet thou.

Good to know I do hope that the blue or pink colours are also the colour beneath as well.
So have you tried out any of the apps available on the phone apart from nokias own exclusive apps.

Re: Nokia Lumia 800 is out today with T-Mobile

Well I've been using WP7 since the public availability of it, I've also written a couple of apps for them.

As such I've only bothered to install a few games and apps I use a lot.

Above I mentioned how I hadn't found the phone CPU constrained previously, certain operations are faster than the slower CPU in the Omnia7, but its only about 15% of the things I use the phone for that are. Browsing the web for instance its still ALWAYS limited by t-mobile, I seldom use my phone at home for a browser (have too many PCs/Tablets/SmartTVs about).

But apps run fine, I think one of the limitations most people will find is the time it takes to fill the RAM with data, this I believe is bottlenecked by the flash and RAM clock, both of which tend to gobble power as they bring a very small speed increase. This is speculation I hasten to add.

Is there any kind of app in particular your curious about?
