Sleeping with the enemy: my life with Windows Phone

    http://apebox.org/wordpress/rants/407/

So where to begin? Well, I’ll begin at the start: WP7 is a joy to use. It really just is. It’s the first mobile OS to try something radically different in the UI department for years. Everyone else these days (especially Android) builds iPhone rip-offs to varying degrees, and even the iPhone interface has a lot in common with the old old OLD interfaces found on the dumb Nokia phones of the 1990s. WP7 has an interface which provides just the right level of passively visible information and interactivity, and manages to do it with an elegance that no Android home screen filled with widgets will ever manage.

Re: Sleeping with the enemy: my life with Windows Phone

I picked myself up a Nokia Lumnia 710, I know I won't get Windows Phone 8, but with 7.8 on the way I won't be worried too much about that. Very happy with it I have to say, very nice phone to hold and use.

There are a few things about the OS I don't like, such as not being able to set my own ring tones etc, BUT in all fairness what phone OS doesn't have it's niggles ?

Re: Sleeping with the enemy: my life with Windows Phone

Don't mean to ressurect but does anyone here have any experience with a Nokia Lumia 610?

My fossil of a Nokia has finally decided to give up on me so I've been eyeing up some cheap and cheerful replacements. I've heard good things about the Lumias and I like the look of the windows OS so that is certainly on the radar. I just want something to call, text and maybe browse internet; I won't be playing games or loading it with apps or anything (I don't think). Quick, snappy performance when doing the basics and solid feeling build quality is all that I'm looking for.

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mob...OKIA-LUMIA-710

I'm not sure how much you're paying for a 610, but the 710 at that price is a steal. The processor is faster (1.4GHz instead of 800MHz) and it has double the RAM (512MB instead of 256MB). The 610 is basically the lowest spec'd Windows Phone handset. The 710 is among the highest - other phones have bigger screens, better cameras, but not much else.

Re: Sleeping with the enemy: my life with Windows Phone

Thanks for the reply McPhee, the 710 does sound great but I don't think it's available in Ireland (or isn't on any of the websites I've been on...), it seems to be the Lumia 800 or 610 over here. Ah well, I managed to coax my old phone back to life and, the gods be willing, I'll try to hold on to it until Windows Phone 8 comes out and maybe decide then. But I'd be ignoring my own advice of never wait for 'new' tech - it would be all the expensive flagship sets on release day wouldn't it? If worst comes to worst I'll just get a cheapy Android

Can't believe I'm waiting for the release of a phone OS... Tech these days...

I love my 710 as I've said before, it's a very slick easy to use phone and goes like the clappers, you really can't knock it for the price, I know mines on a contract but it's still worth having a play

Re: Sleeping with the enemy: my life with Windows Phone

She currently pays £10 a month on giffgaff. So has signed up for the 24 month contract at £7.50 a month, but if the cahshback works she gest £50 back anyway. Works out at around £5.5 a month for more calls, texts and data than she needs. I have also just downloaded the windows 8 preview and installed it on a temp drive on her laptop, if it all works out nicely it should be very convenient.
