More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05...playback_dead/

Seems that DVD playback has been removed from WMP. Not huge but still annoying.

Also, it seems Media Centre will be a paid for addon.....and one that requires Windows 8 Pro to begin with........

Will they even bother with an mp3 codec come release time?

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

There is no DVD playback in certain Windows 7 versions already, you need to purchase / get a decoder.

I'd be happy for them to remove all codecs to be honest, if they actually put a proper codec management system in. It's still a nightmare sorting them out sometimes.

Perhaps they are considering streaming services so they can make money off of it.

can't stream a dvd from your own dvd player though.... it's in the machine.

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

It's licensing costs. The less dependency they have on others when pricing up Windows the better. The number of people who probably play DVDs on their PC is going to be small these days compared to the cost of a blanket licence.

Who knows if there is also a patent issue / concern buried in there somewhere too?

Licensing costs is a fair point but I can't imagine MS passing on the saving to consumers by lowering the price of the software.

I have no plans to even consider Windows 8, Windows 7 still feels fast and as fresh today as it did when it first came out

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

I'm building a new PC so it's a difficult choice between buying 7 or waiting for 8. I'm still on Vista on my current machine, I always thought I'd skip 7 thinking 8 would be an improvement but it seems not.

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

Oh it's definitely an improvement. The moaning seems to overshadow that; Windows 8 is snappier than 7, boot is faster, hibernation actually works properly, multi-monitor support is better etc. The question really is down to whether or not you can grow to use the Metro interface. Those that can't will invariably hate Windows 8, those that can should find it a good upgrade.

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

I might consider Win8 for an HTPC, but for a gaming PC, I'd still prefer a Win7. Win8's Metro UI makes it less appropriate for my gaming PC, I guess.

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

IMO using Windows 8 is considered for the casual tablet, win 8 mobile and arm device users who will browse, check email and social networking. But what I can't see is corporate, developers and media organisations using this as it takes away the power to customise the OS to suit your needs. M$ is making the OS more of a locked down version of Mac where the average user will not be to tinker with the settings unless they dig around for loop holes.

Another i hate with win8 is the awkward placing of the control panel having to switch to desktop to access the background settings. Why can't it be accessed via the metro GUI. For me i'll stay with windows 7 but for family windows 8 will be valid option stopping them messing settings I put in place.

Re: More reasons to stay away from Windows 8

I completely agree with NitrousX it seems that windows 8 is more aimed at the tablet and mobile phone side of the market than the actual desktop/laptop market. ive tried the RC and did not like it so will not upgrade from windows 7.
