Thread: WHS Restoring Win7 to a new drive

    WHS Restoring Win7 to a new drive

    Lo people

    Nice clean working install of Win7 on PC, all sorted and tweaked to how it's liked

    New SSD drive (yup... another cheap SSD from Kingston )

    Back Up Win7 install to WHS: done
    Remove current Win7 boot drive (for safety) and install new SSD
    Boot off WHS Restore CD
    Use this software to partition and format SSD drive
    Show WHS restor software which PC restore to use (is sussed it on it's own.. must recognise the Mobo or something) and show it the SSD drive now formatted and ready.

    and then remember......Win7 installs a 100mb partition on all my installs on Win7. Never did work out what it was for.. but it's there. Can't work out how to restore it AND the main C drive...

    so WHS is restoring the main C drive only...
    so....

    will it work?

    Guesses please .. about 1 hour to go

    100mb partition is for recovery options as I understand it. It's non-essential - if you install Windows 7 onto a pre-formatted partition it doesn't force you to create the 100mb partition.

    Wouldn't surprise me if you need to use a Windows disk to do a startup repair if the bootloader is gone.

    gonna try this .. see what occurs

    tbh though.. the 100mb partition seems to hold all the recovery options that... /cough... family members do use after booting down by accident by unplugging the power.

    Yeah, definitely. Although I've found a few people recently trying to restore setups that are already working - simply because they didn't try to make it boot up once to check.

    Waited v long time.... read this thread... got bored.....thought of another way.

    So...Win7 install fresh... wait for it to create the two partitions... then stop it (power off) and boot off restore CD and show it where the two partitions are... (had to re assign drive letter to the smal partition ... took B as I don't have any floppy drives) and C for the larger.. then show it the 2 from WHS...

    wil see if that works
