    Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

Hey, I previously bought a Dell laptop which came with Windows 7 already installed and with it came a 'Windows 7 Reinstallation DVD'. Out of interest, could this be used to install onto the new PC I'm about to get (to save me buying Windows 7 from my PC also)? The disc looks like the one on the link but for 64 bit

    Thanks

    Re: Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

No, it will only work with the Dell PC, thats why they make the discs like that

Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

Also the copy of Windows that came with your Dell PC lives and dies with that PC - it's what's known as OEM and is not transferrable to a new machine.

    Re: Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

I'm not sure it would work on another computer but if it did it would have all the wrong drivers installed. You could figure out how to remove those drivers but then you wouldn't have a license to activate it on the other computer anyway so it'd be pretty pointless. You can always try a Linux distro if you're not bothered about gaming as they're 100% free

OEM versions can be installed and activated on different pc's actually. I always buy OEM versions of windows and have to keep reactivating when I upgrade my computer. Maybe a manufacturer customized OEM is different though...

Thanks guys, Scan sells Windows 7 for over £70, I'm assuming there's no way to get it cheaper than this? Can you get student discount?

Yes you can. I got my copy of W7 home premium for 30 quid on a student discount. All you need is a .ac.uk email address to get it which you should easily be able to get from your place of education. the website for the offer is called something like "the ultimate steal".

Thanks but I've only found this, which doesn't seem to have it? http://store.digitalriver.com/store/....SHHomePbPage# (When I type in theultimatesteal.co.uk it changes to this link(
Also, I'm going to Uni in September but don't have a .ac.uk email just yet - would it still work?

    Re: Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

I think that's the site I downloaded it from yeh. Doesn't look like the price is cheap though which sucks. It was back in 2009 when I did a comptia a+ course so maybe it's changed. Get in touch with the uni and see if they can help. There's always someone that works there that knows how to get loads of cheap deals n stuff for you students You could also try posting on one of those student forums. As far as I remember you couldn't get the deal unless you used a .ac.uk email address, but that may have changed...

    Re: Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

    a) Moving an OEM installation of Windows between computers - or at least, between different motherboards - is at the very least outside the law. The EULA specifically states that you can't change the motherboard (except under specific circumstances and with Microsoft's permission). So unless you have Microsoft's explicit permission to reinstall on a different motherboard, you are in breach of contract if you reinstall OEM Windows on a computer with a different motherboard, which means you have committed a civil wrong (a lovely phrase that I have wikipedia to thank for ), making yourself liable to legal action. There is a lot of shading and fuzz in the meaning of terms like illegal, unlawful, and extralegal, including how breaches of civil law should be viewed. However, the action is undeniably wrong.

    b) The Student pricing for Windows is only for upgrade versions, which means the computer needs a properly licensed previous copy of Windows (retail or OEM) to use the student upgrades legally. Installing them on a clean system that has never had a previous OS on is also a breach of contract (see above ).

Nah I don't agree. I've never paid attention to a single EULA in my life. It's the laws that matter. I bet no one could get me busted for what I've done with my copy of Windows. It's ridiculous to even worry about it. It's only active on one computer at a time. I'll upgrade my computer if I want. Who's gonna buy a new license just because they upgrade their motherboard lol...

Haven't you guys read that story on here? Just goes to show what I'm talking about... http://hexus.net/gaming/news/industr...nloaded-games/

I'm not arguing what's technically possible, I'm stating the terms of the OEM license. This has been debated to death elsewhere (both on Hexus and around the internet). It's technically possible to download a copy and a keygen off the internet, but that doesn't mean it's right. OEM software is available in the channel and should be seen as a privilege: if it's abused it's entirely reasonable that the vendor would remove that channel.

Doesn't even matter because I think they're supposed to be doing away with OEM vs Retail with Windows 8 anyway. Anyways upgrading components in your computer is nothing like using a pirate copy of windows! I'm not gonna just not upgrade my computer so mr microsoft doesn't cry about how poor they are lol...

    Re: Windows 7 Reinstallation Disc?

If you can regularly afford to be upgrading your machine you can afford a retail license for your operating system, surely? One of the features of the retail license is that it can be transferred to new hardware, which the OEM license cannot. I'm sure you'd be the first to complain if Microsoft refused to activate your old license on your new machine.
