Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

Hi. i have installed win8 on a dell xps 15 inch laptop and from today it wont load properly.

the bios boot screen come sup fine then after just a blank screen.

tried taking out the battery, starting multiple times and even hitting F8 and still same problem

I tried booting using win 8 upgrade OS ISO i made on a USB and what happens is that the win 8 blue logo appears in a blank background and then after a few minutes it disappears and i am left again with a blank screen?

    any reason why?

    Thanks all

Re: Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

edit: when i try to boot up from win 8 install ISO. after like 10mins of the blank screen, this appears for a split second:

i am not sure what the actual error is but a blue screen with the large text appears along with that face for a split second.

dont know the exact error that it says on my screen as the screen dissapears too quickly

Re: Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

The error code is: Error Code: 0x0000005C

The error is usually driver related.

I'm only guessing, but check to see if your bios needs updating, maybe try downloading the Win 8 iso again and do a clean install.

Shouldn't really be having any issues with the L501x and windows 8. Have you added/changed any hardware?

Re: Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

Im in a similar one, im trying to boot off a USB and its flashing up the error screen. Helpfully it reboots before I can even tell me the error (recorded it on my phone to try and grab the error code). Going to go scrounge a DVD i can burn, see if its the usb causing the problems.

Edit: Ran the installation from within windows, off the USB, seems to be working so far

Re: Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

Sorry to hear about your hard drive, but before you buy a new one, test the drive with another laptop/pc (run chkdsk, run defrag only if HDD not SSD, run free utilities like crystaldisk on either HDD or SSD).

If your drive isn't the problem then it's more likely to be the motherboard and as your laptop is only a year old contact dell support. Best of luck.

Re: Windows 8 cant start - blank screen

You could make a boot usb and run chkdsk/fdisk in dos mode. More information and links to files:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ve-create.html

After creating the boot usb, turn on laptop, get to bios settings (press F2 to enter bios settings) check the problem drive is recognised and select to boot from usb this will get you into dos mode. (Do this with the l501x with problem hard drive, not your other rig).

Once in dos you can run chkdsk, fdisk.

Checked the dell website the l501x does not support win 8 at the moment, the l502x is supported. If your laptop was working fine with win 7 then reinstall that OS. If your still determined to install win 8 then check the bios is version A08, if not follow the link below to download your latest bios version and install before your next attempt.

I can't even reinstall windows 7 on the HDD mate. I got a spare 40gb laptop drive that I will try and if that installs win 8 fine I know the previous hdd is the issue and nothing else on the laptop

A bit out there, but you could try changing from AHCI to IDE in the bios to see if it makes a difference, not all but I know there have been some problems installing via AHCI enabled drives.
