    Windows Mobile

    Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right place where to ask. My company is going to buy some new devices for special areas (where there is danger of explosions so they need to meet some specific standards). We'll have to develop a few applications to put on them and we'd prefer something that runs windows. What do you think of Windows Mobile 6.5.3 (and I don't mean WP)?
I can't post the link to the page sorry
    Thanks for your help

    Re: Windows Mobile

I really like the WP8 phones, but that doesn't really help you, however posting this answer will bump the thread and someone else might have a better answer than mine.

    Good luck.

    Re: Windows Mobile

Honestly, its pretty outdated, and doesn't really give you any advantages over android or embedded linux, infact its probably worse because the apis etc are so much older.

Why do you think windows mobile is likely to be any easier to develop for?

Higher level language, ease of access for dev tools, better programming language than Java (unless you want to be all hip and do an Android app in Scala). Knowledge barrier is lower and access to tools is less convuluted for the layman developer not tied to a platform other than a windows OS.

Choosing the overall platform is probably less the OS, more the device, don't know about the embedded linux ones but Android devices at that level are pretty expensive. It's also a lot harder to get physical keyboards on Android kit.

APIs are quite limited, lack of new async functionality means you need to keep stuff off the UI thread where possible but other than that it's not much different to .net 2.0 winforms stuff (made an app in about 3 days of dev on one years ago from scratch). Only gotcha is working with the .Net micro framework you lose some functionality but in most cases it's not an issue for the app.

The device is a couple of years old which is probably down to the certification time

OS is ok, haven't used it in about 5 years since I had an Xperia X1 though. Does the job so to speak

I do not think WP8 phones are good. There are few apps are supported by Win8 phones, which will make you annoy.
