Heh, it's odd isn't it. Because seven ate nine!
Or maybe because nine is bad in Japan.
Or just a cunning plan by MS to get press attention.

My thinking is that they realised they were heading down the wrong path with 9.
The solution to the GUI problem in 9 was to have tiles on touch devices by default, and a start menu on desktop PC's (and laptops) by default thus keeping the 2 different GUI's. Windows would then default to using the GUI most suited to the type of device that it is being used on.
With 10 they've married the 2 GUI's together so that your applications aren't jumping from one to another.
Does this warrant a complete version jump? perhaps not, and perhaps there is more to it than that but that's my feeling. Its probably also a rebranding process for confidence amongst the business sector.
I've just installed 10 Technical Preview on Virtualbox and its working like a charm but without the charms bar (hooray!!!)
It is only NT 6.4 which really suggests GUI and aesthetic changes rather than anything major under the hood.
I get the feeling this will cancel out plans for 8.2 especially if this is to become a free upgrade to anyone with 8.

There's the tip of the iceberg as to why not 9.

so a stupid code, made so much confusion and hassle?
Windows has a bit of a star trek curse with their operating systems.
8's bad, 7's good, vista's bad, xp's good etc etc.
I think they might just want to skip the next good one and skip straight to the bad.
So is anyone running this as their daily OS?
Not yet, but it'll be going on to my audio workstation at some point over the next month or so, mostly because I will finally have a use-case scenario that will actually benefit from having an OS that can switch between touch-centric and standard desktop modes (well I will come end of January, anyway ).
So many different stories about versions, capabilities and prices. Will they aim to roll all the versions into one that runs on tablets, phones and laptops/desktops?
