- Upgrade Win 7 to 10.
As part of this upgrade will this involve me having to re-install windows and the HDD being wiped and Win 10 being installed?
I'm asking if this is the case I'll need to make a start on my backups.
Nope, it's an in place update, like your usual windows SP1 type updates.
But having a backup would be good anyway.

Wow this is awesome. I had no idea, I might actually upgrade to the insider preview now then. The only reason I didnt was because I couldn't be bothered reinstalling the OS AGAIN when the real windows 10 came out.
Unless you already have it downloaded, you're going to find it difficult to do so now. 10162 was the last ISO released, and is (temporarily) not available from the MS website. You'll also need an activation key now if you haven't already installed. MS no longer seems to have any listed, but they are available over on tenforums, with the following caveat - once you install 10162, you'll have to do the upgrade to 10240 before you can install a working key. The older ones don't work anymore.
There are some sites purporting to have homegrown ISO's of 10240, but keep in mind they are not official - the chance you take is your own.
