    Media Player has stopped working

That's about all I can tell you. I have checked device manager, and under DVD/CD ROM drives, - MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ8AOASW, I have the message, 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).' My computer is an ASUS K53E. Any suggestions?

MPC-HC is very good as well, I tend to use it more than VLC these days.

Like how the forum is censoring the Mat****a brand name.

MPC is good too. But the up side to VLC is it doesn't need codecs.

VLC Used to be my go-to player, but I've had awful audio sync issues in the last few builds. MPC-HC has been bomb proof. I think the OP will have all the codecs they need considering they are looking for an alternative to WMP.

Anyway, back on topic, I just jumped in with a software recommendation but it looks like it's possible a hardware/driver issue.

I think it'd be worth OP testing VLC or MPC-HC just to see if it solves the problem

Open the device manager, remove the drive, and scan for changes. It should re-install the device and the appropriate drivers. If that doesn't work, you can try this registry fix from MS -
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929461

Yes, it's listed as for Vista, but you can pretty much be assured that registry fixes work across the board for any version of Windows that's built on NT4.1 and higher.

There's also the possibility that the optical drive has gone bad. Try the first option, and see if you have access to a different drive in the meantime. Otherwise, try the registry fix.
