Upgrading Win 8.1 on HDD to Win 10 on SSD without upgrading on the hdd.

I am setting up my younger brothers new laptop which came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. But as it is a Lenovo from the superfish era I would prefer to remove everything when I upgrade it to windows 10.

So is there a way to do the windows 10 upgrade on an empty SSD without first upgrading the 8.1 on the hard rive that is getting replaced?

Internet seems kind of conflicted about this and some people say I have to upgrade first some say I can just choose to create external media in the media creation tool and then install on an ssd from that and that it should work.

I would really appreciate any help or first hand experience someone might have.

No, you have to 'upgrade' first and then you can do a clean install as i believe the hardware is then registered with MS.
