    XBOX 360 Questions

I am thinking of buying a Used XBOX 360.

What are the cables / necessary kit needed?
What is a RROD and can it be always fixed using new coat of thermal paste?
Is it easy to use a generic HDD ?

    Thanks!

1.) That depends on you. If its second hand it will most likely come with the standard composite/component cable - if not HDMI cables aren't expensive.

2.) RRoD/RLoD/Etc can not always be permanently fixed by the X-clamp trick. If you end up with a machine which has a late 2008/2009 MFR date you should be fine however. Best bet is to pick up a Slim on the cheap.

3.) HDD's are ID linked with the console. IIRC, only certain WD Scorpio Blues were fully compatible (even then it was a risk) - although ATM HMV are selling 250GB HDD's for the old model off for £30.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

You will need the power supply with it, if your buying used make sure it's stated it comes with one, you will also need an HDMI cable, or an AV cable, the original 360's didn't have an HDMI out, but I believe these are few and far between now. Just confirm it has HDMI out if you want to use HDMI. You'll also need a pad, you can get either a wireless pad or a wired pad.

Also, if you want a hard drive with it, check that also. All 360 consoles come wit ha bit of free space but were talking MB not GB.

Again, if you are buying used, confirm you get the necessary accessories.

    Short answer no.

It's a hardware issue, I have heard of cases where the console has been fixed with new paste, bolts/washers and a heat gun and they have lasted, but as stated this is more a fault at the hardware level, it's also one of the reasons that MS offered a 3 year extended warranty on affected consoles.

I know it's possible on the slim consoles, however, I'm not certain about the old phat (fat) models. You can purchase official HDD replacements from MS relatively cheap these days. Also, unless you planning on installing all your games to HDD or downloading a lot of content from the market place and upgraded HDD is not essential.

    Re: XBOX 360 Questions

    generic HDD
Yes on Phat models was quite easy to do grab a WD scorpio, for example use a WD2500BEVT for a 250gb drive and google for a hddss.bin file this then needs to be flashed using hddhackr on your PC.

but with current media prices try and hunt out that £30 250 from HMV as mentioned previously.

    RROD
nearly all are fixable, some by new thermal paste, x-clamp removal and spacers put in, but some need to be reflowed with a heat gun with is a bit more drastic, youtube has many videos on this.

Been on a Halo binge myself recently.

Finished Reach over the weekend and starting on Halo:CEA.

If you haven't played Reach/ODST don't be put off by them as their not "main" titles, they're very good games, ODST perhaps surprisingly so (ODST also has the best music out of the lot).

PGR4 is the best in genre tbh.

Absolutely! Very fond memories of Live on the Florence circuits. <3

But from the current genre, PGR4 is head and shoulders above the rest.

    Re: XBOX 360 Questions

Are you looking for a slim? If not I have a 360 elite with RROD that I just couldn't be bothered to fix, but is likely an easy one. Includes original box, power supply, HDMI, manual, HDD. PM me if interested - hope this wasn't too rude an aside...

My first edition 360 has RROD three times since I got it, Microsoft have repaired or replaced it everytime. If you don't mind being gameless for 2-3 weeks :/

    Re: XBOX 360 Questions

I am deciding on whether to get a XBOX 360 Premium off GAME or get the new slim ones. Apparently, the slim ones are quiet , dont have an external power brick and an external WiFi dongle.
Oh, and you can just use a UFD these days , no need for a HDD.

The slims do have a power brick, but it is a lot smaller than the old models, and they are alot quieter.

They are more energy efficient too but not majorly another bonus is it has a USB port which can power the kinect without having to connect the kinect to the mains with a seperate lead.
