    What RAM should i buy?

    Hi guys,

I need some more ram as i'm sure Vista is going to kill my system running only 1gb.

I do a little bit of oc'ing nothing major, i also play counter Strike Source and Football Manager 2006.

This is what i'm looking at..

Neither, get some value ram. If you're only doing a little overclocking then its not worth shelling out on pricey ram.

With Athlon 64's cpu speed is far more important than running memory 1:1. Just put it on a divider and run it at stock while you overclock the processor.

Well if i get some decent ram i might try and push my cpu to around the 2.8 mark. Only reason now why i'm doing a little oc'ing is probably due to my ram.

Do you think the Geil stuff is better than corsair?

I think the Geil stuff is miles better than any other value ram you can buy. microdirect.co.uk sell it. It's the stuff with the blue heatspreaders on. You can also get it off ebay.

You can either buy a 2gb kit or get 2x1gb. The 2x1gb is cheaper.

    2gb kit: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...6382&GroupID=0

    1gb: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Product...8559&GroupID=0

edit: Just saw the bit about overclocking in your post. The geil stuff is amazing for overclocking. I've got some and it is completely happy running at 250mhz.

Getting a high processor speed is not related to Ram speed with Athlon 64's though. With a 1/2 divider I could run the 3ghz I have now with pc2700 ram and have a 1-2% performance drop.

To get your cpu to the 2800mhz mark you could easily do 280x10 with a 3:4 divider putting the ram at 210 with a slight overclock. Most ram can manage that, if not do a 7:10 divider and it will be slightly under at 196mhz but the 50mhz cpu speed so make up for that.

At the end of the day the only type of thing I have seen noticeable improvements in these days with high ram speeds is Superpi and other benchmarks. For gaming the results are fairly unconclusive. I'll run some test on the fear benchmark and get back to you.

Ok i'll give that a go tonight. Should i run the Ram at 1T or 2T?

Thanks for the link. I'll probably go with your recommendation. I may need some help lads with the oc'ing of my memory if thats ok? (never oc'd ram before)

EDIT: just seen overclockers have it for £117 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...aMY_2d046_2dGL

Do you not think pc4000 stuff is worth it?

    Just did some quick testing:

334x9 5:6 divider, settings as sig except testing an x800gto @xtpe
    (Memory at 278mhz)

    Superpi 1m 28.250s

    Fear test - Max/Max 1024x768
    Min 16
    Av 35
    Max 91

    <25 31%
    <25<40 47%
    >40% 22%

334x9 3:5 divider, settings as sig except testing an x800gto @xtpe
    (Memory at 200mhz)

    Superpi 1m 29.797

    Fear test - Max/Max 1024x768
    Min 16
    Av 35
    Max 90

    <25 31%
    <25<40 47%
    >40% 22%

I was surprised by that! The only difference is that the max fps hit increased by 1 to 91! So not any significant difference at all. I may do a little more later, test memory read/write etc.

I've seen the Geil Value RAM fitted to a VERY broad range of motherboards over the last year......none have had a problem with it yet.

As for overclockers.co.uk - I can't say what I think of that company on this forum - lets just say "Good luck getting what you want if you order from them"......

Geil value RAM aint cheapy stuff... Tis decent quality ram (it just aint suitable for massive overclocking etc). Used it in several systems myself and its always been rock solid.

Seem to remember a news post on OCuk saying they had the lowest RMA rate on Geil out of all the memory they stocked...

You get mixed messages about every company. OverclockersUK is my favourite online hardware etailer by far. They're quicker and cheaper, and the community is brilliant. But everyone has bad experiences with every company. I've had two bad deliveries from scan, and none from OcUK, so it's swings and roundabouts. (Although not being able to contact www.tekheads.co.uk does lower them in my estimations). Just a defence of OcUK really lol, flame away.

FEAR is not really memory-intensive since graphics are stored in graphics memory not system memory. It would be a fair comparison on something like a 6200TC which uses the main memory)
I could do some encoding testing tomorrow and see if its faster with DDR500 CL3 or DDR400 CL2

That was what I was trying to prove, having fast memory really isn't that important for gaming any more.
