    Vista on AW9D-MAX

    Hey all,

I have an abit AW9D-MAX and connected to sata ports 5 and 6 are two WD Raptor 150GB drives in raid 0 (using the Sil3132 raid feature). (I'm using ports 5 and 6 because i have a 1.5TB raid5 array on ports 1-4).

Because I'm booting off a RAID array, windows needs the drivers on installation. The latest drivers I can find are from the silicon image site (siliconimage.com, just search for SiI3132 - PCI Express (1x) to 2 Port SATA300. I'd post the URL but new users can't).

When it comes to booting into my new vista installation for the first time, it hangs. On screen is the stuck progress bar.

I figured that the reason for this might be that the driver that windows uses is the "SiI 3132 32-bit Windows SATARAID5 Driver" is marked as supporting vista beta 2 (NOT RTM like other drivers on that page).

I've tried the x86 and the x64 versions of the installer with the appropriate drivers, but the same always happens.

XP sp2 works just fine on this computer.

Any ideas? Is this driver ok for vista RTM? Could it be some other reason?

    Will

After further testing, I have ruled out the driver as being the problem.

Is there a possibility that the fact that I'm using a quad core CPU with an AW9D-MAX a problem? It works just fine with XP pro, but I see that the abit website doesn't explicitly mention this board as being quad-core ready.

    Will

[edit: although the store where I purchased this board (overclockers.co.uk) does say in it's product description "Intel® Core 2 Duo, Pentium EE,Pentium D, Quad Core Ready"]

More sluthing has found me the beta bios page, and the V1.4 Beta 1 bios.

Its readme file states that this beta "has fix Kensfiled CPU with 3DMark & Vista issue" (my cpu is a kentsfield, a QX6800).

I'm not overly keen on using a beta version of a BIOS, i do use this machine for work! But having said that, has anyone tried this? Are betas generally quite safe to use?

Any idea when the final version of the V1.4 bios will be released?

[edit: 3 days ago, apparently. It's on the abit ftp site, but not on the flashmenu liveupdate thing. I'll give it a try now.]

I'm having exactly the same problem with the QuadGT. Running XP with Quad-core is fine, but Vista hangs apart from when in Safe Mode. Is the upcoming BIOS update for the QuadGT specifically going to address this issue?

    Just for interest;

I've been looking at the AW9D-max but was not impressed by abit bios support ,but that beta bios that is in the testing stages should by coming out as an 'official' one in a month or two. This should made the AW9D-MAX a better prospect.

The BIOS' seem few and far between, its been around a year since I owned an Abit board and things seem to have changed quite a lot.
