FP-IN9 SLI fire up problem

Sorry if this is a really basic mistake i have made.
This is my first complete build and Im having a little trouble, i have built my machine up and when turned on only runs for about 1min and then powers down. Is there something really basic i have forgotten?
I have checked in the startup screen and the temp seems fine.
I have a pentium 4 3.4ghz CPU and im using the cooler provided i have fitted 2 large cooler fans in the case. I think i have connected all the power leads ok?
It starts ok and even attempts to boot form the windows disk but after about 1min just powers off.

The system is
PSU XCLIO 14 S4P3 550w
CPU PENTIUM 4 650+ 3.4ghz 800mhz fsb
Board ABIT Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI nf6
1g ddr2 667 PC5300 CL5 with XCLIO copper cool x2
Graphics GEFORCE 7600 GT FATAL1TY SLI 650mhz
fans 2x Noctua NF.S12
HD 250gb western digital raid edition 720
Belkin hi speed fire wire PCI card

Okay, first thing to double-check is that you've made all the appropriate connections - including the ATX12v/EPS power cable from the PSU to the motherboard, and the PCI Express Graphics power cable if your graphics card needs it.

Beyond that, here are some questions to answer which will help us help you to diagnose this situation:

Does your case have a speaker, and if so have you connected it to the speaker header on the board? If so, do you hear any alarms or other oddness prior to shutdown?

Also you say it tries to boot from the "Windows disk". Do you mean you're trying to boot from a Windows XP or Vista setup CD/DVD (i.e a disc with a c), or is it trying to boot from the hard disk (with a k)?

Either way, does it always shut down at precisely the same point, or does it vary a bit?

If you are booting from a CD/DVD, what happens when you take this disc out? Does the computer just sit there complaining about a boot device failure, or does it still shut down?

Can you get into the BIOS and check the temperatures? If so, what do you see?

Many thanks for your reply. Based on this I have tried going into bios and just letting it sit there. After a short time it simply switches off as before which in my mind now removed CD/DVD and HD boot up as an issue.
The CPU is set to 50oC +/- 10oC and at 'switch off' the cpu is sat at 55oC.
System is set at 35oC +-5oC and is at 32oC at fail. PWM is around 49oC at fail. If I repeatedly test this it get to the point where it will not boot up at all until it has sat for several minutes-again pointing to a temp issue.
Any ideas why it seems to be overheating but not reflecting high temps in bios? Am i getting localised overheating in the CPU causing it to switch off itself?

Its possible, have you good copntact between CPU and HSF?

CLassic sign in this, if this is the case, clean the CPU with Icypropol alcohol and some cue-tips as well as underneath the HSF. once dry repply the the thermal paste (artic silver 5 is the best) You only need to put ONE dollop (about the size of a grain of rice) in the centre of the CPU. Remountthe hsf, its weight should then spread the paste nice and flat over your cpu. Job done

PS make sure you have the fan connected the the fan header on your board.
