    Airpace and Vista 64Bit

A while ago i had a good moan about the drivers for Airpace on 64Bit and how they would not work.

Well...i just did a full re-install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit and installed the drivers for the Wifi almost immediately.

Anyway.......it now works sweet as a nut....just thought everyone should know as im not the only one that has had this problem ..thanks

    Re: Airpace and Vista 64Bit

Mine is pretty temperamental on 32-bit. Sometimes when you log in it just doesn't pick u any networks until you restart. And I have a peculiar but persistent 'limited connectivity' problem.

It could be my router though.

    Re: Airpace and Vista 64Bit

A bit OT, but relevant (at least to me). Can the Airpace card be used with a non-Abit board?

The reason I ask is that it's the only reasonably priced PCI-E wireless card I can find in the UK, and Abits ' current mATX AM2 boards are a wee bit pricey for a basic HTPC.

Personally I can't see why it wouldn't, but there could be some coding in the drivers to stop it working with non-abit kit. Chances are it'll be used on Vista 64 Home Premium.

Have you looked at the Abit NF-M2n

Blatant spam (though I think I'll survive on the Abit forum ) but it's pretty reasonably priced and is a brilliant board for that kind of thing I built a system with one and you'll love it!

Spam over. The airpace can be used with any manufacturers motherboard

If you mean the nView, yes I did - a bit too pricey but a nice board never the less. Also been discontinued.

I've also looked at the NF-M2S which is more reasonably priced, but is somewhat crippled by only 8x bandwidth on the PCI-E slot (as are all of the low end nVidia mATX boards apparently). For a good deal less (about 2/3 of the price) I can get a K8M890 Via chipset board with full 16x on the PCI-E. Garbage for overclocking, but that's not a major concern for an HTPC to be honest.

Edit: Replacement AN-M2 boards are dear too.

I'm sure I read somewhere there are very few cards that will use x16 bandwidth. (None actually, but this is my foggy memory)

Yeah, and it was probably me that said it

I've always been a bit of a critic of PCI-E as we hadn't even saturated 8 x AGP when it first came out.

    AGP x 8 = 8 x 66
    PCI-E x 8 = 8 x 100 (and probably only gets challenged with 8800 series cards & the ATI equivalent)

It just seems a bit backward to pay a premium for something that's crippled as opposed to less for something that functions at full spec.

Anyway, I've put the HTPC build on hold for the time being, till the next gen of AMD cpus and next gen GFX cards come out (as it'll drop the price of current stuff a bit more). Perhaps the AN-M2 boards will become more reasonably priced (provided Abit don't discontinue them prematurely).

Probably - I've not really been keeping up to speed with these things like I used to.

Anyway, if it's like previous launches on new CPUs & chipsets it'll be about a month before we see them filtering through into UK e-suppliers in any kind of volume.
