AW9D-MAX Hangs, 4E error, no POST

First off, hello to everyone I'm new to this forum, but not new to forums or computers.

I recently acquired a NIB Abit AW9D-MAX mobo, had been sitting unopened in a closet for 2 years. I swapped it into my system, and it wont POST. It hangs with error 4E, which means:

    1. Program MTRR of M1 CPU
    2. Initialize L2 cache for P6 class CPU & program CPU with proper cacheable range
    3. Initialize the APIC for P6 class CPU
    4. On MP platform, adjust the cacheable range to smaller one in case the cacheable ranges between each CPU are not identical
Not sure exactly what this meand, I know my Pentium D 820 is supported. I tried removing and re-seating the proc, still no go. I know the CPU, VGA, RAM and PSU are all good, as they came out of my previous working system (Intel D955XBK board).

Could I just need a BIOS upgrade to run the dual-core? If so, how do I go about updtating it if I cant POST? thanks!

    Will

1st off thanks for filling in the "my system" details as it makes life easier.

    1) try with only 1 DIMM or at most 2 installed.

    2) I doubt that's going to help though as I suspect that it's your 3870x2 causing the problem.
Can you beg/steal/borrow a single PCI-E/PCI GPU (ideally of that vintage)?

btw I take it that you are in the USA?

Re: AW9D-MAX Hangs, 4E error, no POST

yea I figured having the specs would help

I've got a radeon x700 PCIe card I could toss in. why would the code talk about the processor if its the video card though?

and yes, I'm in the US. I tried emailing abit tech support via their website, but the link for mexico/usa/canada doesnt work

:EDT: D'OH I just realized this is a european forum lol. ah well, I found it from google

try it with the Radeon & if it works update the BIOS.

abit support in the USA is now handled by their parent company, USI.

Re: AW9D-MAX Hangs, 4E error, no POST

well the other card didnt work, so I picked up a replacement BIOS chip off ebay that was pre-programmed with the latest (17 I think) version of the BIOS, popped it in and all works beautifully!
