Abit Quad GT X38 does not read Q9550 temperature correctly
Hi,
I have just replaced a Q6600 in my Abit Quad GT X38 with a Q9550.
The motherboard / Abit Guru is reading the CPU temperature as 103 C.
Core Temp reports around 35 C on all cores at idle.
My cooling system temperature probe reports 28 C (sensor taped to the edge of the cooling block copper plate).
Since the latter concur I am going with the motherboard misreading the temperature of the Q9550.
Does anybody know why this is happening?

What BIOS are you running?
I know some of them have had problems reported temps properly.

This is an incomplete reply, until I reboot and try and track down the version...
I installed the last official bios from the Abit website...can't track down a local copy of the install file and have had no luck with trying to access any Abit websites...just getting a page not found.

It sounds right, in as much as that's the version number of the JMicron insert. However, it's wrong, in as much as you need to tell us the version number of the motherboard BIOS itself. You can either get that off the POST screen (last two numbers of the long string running along the bottom), or you can start up FlashMenu - it'll tell you what revision is currently installed.
If it's the last official BIOS, that would imply you're running 14. There's a newer beta around somewhere that carries support for the E0 step Core2's so it might be worth sticking that on to see if it solves the problem.
If it doesn't, seeing as you can get an accurate reading out of CoreTemp/RealTemp, it doesn't sound like the end of the world. If you wanted to use the CPU temp to drive the fan throttling, you can always use the PWM average temp. It's not quite as accurate, but there's still a reasonably linear relationship between the CPU temperature and that of the voltage regulator supplying it. It'd certainly make a reasonable workaround.

since my system is watercooled and flashing the bios once was nerve-wracking enough - I think I'll well enough alone as otherwise I don't seem to be having any problems (about from cpu-z reporting an 8 x multiplier, whereas the bios and CoreTemp say 8.5...).

That sounds like a sensible policy, although BIOS flashing shouldn't be anything other than routine. FlashMenu is a complete waste of time (and an accident waiting to happen), but if you do it with Awdflash from a clean-booting USB key (and for good measure knock your system down to default speed prior to going for it), short of a mains power failure during flashing you should never have a problem.
As far as CPU-Z is concerned, there are a few utilities that don't seem to recognise half multipliers properly. Rightmark's CPU Clock Utility is another one, which is a shame as in every other respect it is the daddy of CPU power management monitoring and control.
