Abit AX78 MB and Windows 7 64 bits Upgrade
Good evening everyone,
I'm new in here and this is my first post...so here it goes :
This weekend I'm planning on upgrading from Windows XP 32 bits to Windows 7 64 Bits and before I do, I would like to clear up a few questions.
My motherboard is an Abit AX78 and I would like to know where to get the drivers for Windows 7 64 bits.
It seems, as I have read on a few forums, that some people have had issues with drivers when they install Windows 7.
Can someone please tell me if the drivers can be found within Windows 7 (since it seems that there is a large database of drivers in this version of windows) or can you please tell me what drivers I will need and where I mind get them.
I also tried searching in the AMD website for the AMD 770 / SB600 Chipset drivers and was not able to get them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankining you all in advance,
MadMax1963

Some you will find...some you wont.
I am running Win7 64Bit on a iX38 QuadGT and i cant get an Ethernet driver for love nor money.
Great board, but god i wish i had gone to ASUS.
Bloody ABIT left everyone high and dry. Their boards were great but their support when they were making boards was rubbish .......... after their pull out is even worse BS!

I hear you Blitzen....When Abit pulled out I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet.
I've had a few Abit Motherboards since I have always used AMD Processors and Abit made, iMHO, some of the best boards for AMD; but in their last few years I did start to notice that their quality was slipping away.
The QuadGT is certainly a great board...since the chipset is Intel...maybe the LAN controller is INTEL also...have you checked the INTEL website for the driver? try to find out what LAN controller you have and go to the manufacturers website..in my case I have a Marvell Yukon and I found the driver in the Marvell site.
I really wish to upgrade this thing to Windows 7 and I'm trying to make the upgrade as smooth as possible...but I have a feeling that it will not be that easy.
I do love this AX78 and it has served me really well and I would love to be able to use it as my windows 7 plaform.
But in the end, deep inside I'm wishing the same as you...should have gone with either Asus, Gigabyte..or MSI.
Thanks for your reply Blitzen !!

Gregory, thank you for taking the time to post...knowing that you have an AX78 and that you didn't have any issues with your Win7 install really puts me at ease.
And yes, you are correct...I did google the issue a lot before posting here...:angst:
Again thank's ...gonna start doing my respective backup before doing the install on friday.
btw...did you install Win7 32 or 64 bits?
Bet wishes,

er i dont see anypoint off installing win7 32....since everything in run supports 64 and win7 came with both copies.
So yeah 64....trust me no issues with mobo its self at all.
oh and welcome to hexus

Georgy and Blitzen,
Just popped in here to thank you guys for the help, a few days ago I installed Win 7 64 bits and it was actually a very easy installation since Win 7 had most of the drivers needed.
I only had a little problem with the sound, It seems that the drivers installed by Windows, for the Realtek High Definition Chip in the MB, configured the sound so that it's output was through the digital connection in the back and since I use analog sound there was no output to my speakers.
Actually in my case the solution was simple, I just downloaded the drivers from the Realtek website, installed, and re-connected my speakers and everything was fixed.
Or you can also google the error and you will find a lot of entries that talk about this issue as well as the solutions, it seems that this is a problem affecting a lot of people whose MB uses the Realtek High definition Audio chip.
Anyway, just wanted to thank you guys for answering my post and giving me the peace of mind needed.
Regards and have a great weekend,

Re: Abit AX78 MB and Windows 7 64 bits Upgrade
Hi, not sure if I'm better off starting a new thread for this.. but I'm trying to install Windows 7 on an ATI AX-78 board (as per this thread) and it keeps completely freezing my system - usually within 5 mins of my Windows session starting. I can't find any Win 7 drivers for this mobo.
I have tried 2 different hard disks, and tried installing both x86 & x64 versions and get the same problem in all cases. I have run individual memory checks on all my RAM chips and they all pass. I have tried installing win 7 drivers for my graphics card (8800GT) but the system crashes out before the install is complete.
My system has been running Vista 64 bits smoothly for 2 years, so my final conclusion is that there has to be a problem with the AX-78 board and Windows 7.
Can anyone help?
p.s. I have started a new thread in-case it is not related to the mobo (http://forums.hexus.net/operating-sy...ml#post2084916)

I used to have that board running my old Intel Q6600 @ 3ghz. The ethernet controller is a Realtek RTL8110SC and the Win 7 driver can be found here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Downloads=true
@zaphox... Have you tried applying fresh thermal paste to the CPU and make sure all cooling fans are clear of any dust and still spinning? It might even be worth putting some fresh thermal paste on the motherboard chips (it's quite easy to remove the motherboard heatsinks). Also try installing all of the Windows 7 online updates before installing the display drivers.
One last thing... What PSU do you have?

I haven't tried adding new thermal paste.. the system still works in Vista (on a separate HD) without crashing so I don't think it's overheating.
I will try the updates tonight, hopefully they will get somewhere before it hangs.
I have a Corsair PSU.. I can't remember the model off the top of my head, but I think it may be the VX550or a HX520.
