Old School - KT7A Raid USB Problem - Help Required

A friend of mine has given me his computer to fix a problem he's been having with his webcam (the cam in question is a labtech "webcam plus").

After 5/10 minutes of use the computer freezes and then shows a blue screen with a "BUG_CODE_USBDRIVER" error, I've not encountered this before but I installed the SP2 service pack, Directx 9 (the webcam requires it apparently for some reason best known to labtech) and the Abit usb filter patch which according to a few of the forum posts I've read should've gone some way to fixing the problem.

Its fixed absoloutly nothing and the computer still hangs after 5/10 minutes of webcam use so I'm at a loss, its been a very long time since I've used anything with a KT7 board let alone attempted to fix one, I was hoping you guys might be able to help.

Does this problem just occur when using that webcam or does it crash with all usb devices?

I havn't tried another usb device with it yet, although he has had trouble getting his usb printer and scanner to work in the past.

Yeah, possibly the only legal copy of xp in the world, Its fully up to date with its updates now aswell.

I have been given some relevent information that may help with the problem.

There are couple links will help to resolve the USB issue on KT133 chipset motherboard (KT7/KT7A).
Microsoft support at http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q240/0/75.asp

VIA's USB Filter driver at http://www.via.com.tw/
or http://www.viahardware.com/.

Per customer's report, most recommendations from http://www.icrontic.com/faqs/kt7faq/kt7faq.htm help a lot as well.

1. Enable an IRQ for USB in the BIOS
2. Install VIA's USB Filter Driver
3. Set "K7 CLK_CTL" as "default" instead of "optimal" in the "Advanced
Chipset Features" submenu of the BIOS.
This has no impact on performance and has solved the USB problem for most
users.(This BIOS setting is not available in BIOS WW)
4. Try setting "Enhance Chip Performance" on both enabled and disabled in
SoftMenuIII of the BIOS.
The USBMan has worked with two independent manufacturers and found that
enabling this option resolves many USB problems on the KT7 series of boards
- see his ABIT page for details.
5. Make sure you have an adequate power supply (at least 300W)
6. Try modifying your memory settings (slower or faster) - this has helped
many people.
7. Get better quality memory (several users have solved USB problems by
replacing generic RAM with Crucial or Mushkin brands)
8. Some users have reported v4.25 of the 4in1 drivers solved USB problems -
see drivers section for link
9. There is a known bug in the Universal Host Controller driver (Uhcd.sys)
shipped with Windows 98SE that causes problems with the VIA chipset.
Microsoft have a patch for this available at their support site under
Q240075.
10.Read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article entitled General USB
Troubleshooting in Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me.
This includes many tips and links to several other related Knowledge Base
articles.
11.Try ticking "disable USB error detection" in Device Manager under Universal
Serial Bus controllers, PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
12.Does your USB device load on a port exceed the power handling capability of
the onboard USB controller? This may be the case with devices such as USB
cameras, in which case purchasing a powered USB hub would help.
13.Problems often arise if you are trying to run your memory too aggressively
- try relaxing your memory settings (see memory section). Try disabling
Force 4-way Interleave and Enable DRAM 4k-Page Mode in SoftMenuIII

Thats awesome mate, I'm gonna download the relevant bits print that off and give it a go :)
