Abit AB9 - very slow file deletion

I've just built the following PC:

Core 2 Duo E6400
Abit AB9
Radeon X1950XT
2GB 533MHZ Crucial RAM
Windows XP Pro
160GB and 250GB Maxtor Diamondmax connected via IDE.
USB2 DVD-RW

If I try to delete more than a few files at a time it seems to take absolutely ages. (So long that I end up cancelling it.)

I've installled all the drivers from the CD. General performance of my PC seems acceptable although not as fast as I was expecting. Games are running fine (Oblivion, Company of Heros, and FEAR all run great on max settings, although in 3D mark 2006 the CPU test only acheived 1 frame per second!)

Any ideas?

Definately some hard drive related problem. PCMark 2005 says that the HDD test failed.

Might be caused by the IDE controller. Most users have the optical drive on the Jmicron IDE controller and use SATA hard drives

OK I guess I'll buy the adapter.

Is it worth me attempting to reinstall windows first? I just inserted my existing hard drive from my old PC and installed the new drivers.

You should always do a fresh install when changing major hardware.

Run "HDTach" on the drive, that should give an indication as to whether its a performance issue or not.
Just ran a quick test with an IDE hdd and there's no issues with performance here (deleted ~ 20 MP3's from a folder, no probs)

Found this little gem, apparently UDMA isnt turned on by default for the JMicron, found the following on another site

The JMicron controller on this and any motherboard that used the ICH8/ICH8R southbridge has to be specifically configured to use UDMA modes. If not, then performance will be slow and you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. To do this you can perform the following procedure: 1) install JMicron by running the AsusSetup.exe (JMB363 dir of P5B CD) 2) right click My Computer and select Properties 3) in Systems Properties select Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager 4) in Device Manager expand SCSI and RAID controllers entry 5) right click on Jmicron controller entry and select Update Driver 6) in "Can Windows connect to Windows Update" select "Yes, this time only" and click Next 7) in "What would you want the wizard to do?" select "Install the software automatically" and click Next 8) the wizard lists all the Jmicron drivers and "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" driver, select the "Standard" driver for installation 9) When done, the system will be using standar

I also found a much more recent driver, WHQL as well. Hope this info helps, I am going to test it when I get home

i had the same problem but i solved mine by installing the jmicron drivers hadn't bothered with them as i was not using raid
