OC'ing X1900XT

I will be getting the 512Mb X1900XT Sapphire in a coulpe of weeks and will put the Zalman V900-Cu heatsink on. I am told this card overclocks well and am wondering if anyone has had experience OC'ing the card and what frequency's they have reached when doing so.

I've not overclocked mine though.
I've read that some of these can overclock well whereas others don't. Apparently, they generally are running at a near peak rate already.
Personally, I don't think you need to overclock a X1900 at all, they run very well but are quite demandning on your PSU and generate quite a bit of heat.

What power supply would I be able to run this card with, will 400W be enough or will I need to buy a new one?

It's recommended a 450w with a 30a rail as a minimum.

If it's below that spec then you run the risk of damanging your card on a full load! (from what I understand)

Even Im a bit worried with my PSU which is an Enermax 460w with a 33a rail, as it also depends on what other components you have connected in your system, mainly Hard drives, optical drives and the CPU will draw the most power.

My understanding is you're running it off a 400w PSU

I'd definitely get an upgrade on the PSU as a priority.

Well I have only one Hard Drive, two DVD drives and a P4 with three fans attached to the case... how much power do you think that sucks? My cousin seems to think that my comp will be fine but I'd rather be safe than sorry so if you could direct me to a power consumption test site or some site that shows the consumption of components it will be much appreciated.

I personally wouldn't risk running the X1900 with your 400w PSU. Do you know how much a is on the 12v rail?

A new psu is a must, i have noticed ppl getting 690/800.
But some get higher with flashing the BIOS.
Why not look at the X1950pro cards that are cheaper and very good.

Sorry m8 but its coming from a clan m8, going to be one hell of a birthday present if I can get a power supply in time.

Do you know of any power supplies that are pretty energy efficient when not at load but can still provide 700W?

My favourite i would recommend to anyone would be the Corsair 620W which under strenous CPU and MaximumPC tests, is capable of running a system that draws more power than its continuous rating .It also comes in with a 520w version. Both are excellent PSU,s and the 620W will last well into the future IMHO.

i run a x1900xt with 4x sata hdd's, 1x dvd rw, 1x dvd rom, 2x 120mm case fans, c2d e6600, 4gb geil ultra low 4-4-4-12, audigy2 zs & a pci tv tuner all running on a Tagan 480w so i wouldn't be to concerned

Checked some power supply recommendation sites and with my system I only need 400W but will need 600W if I want to upgrade further to a Quad core chip and get either SLI or Crossfire setup... thanks for the post Boon72 cause I might of wasted 100pounds on a power supply for nothing out of ignorance
