ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

I have been having the grey screen of death ( also some other random colours with stripes, but the grey screen with coloured stripes is the most frequent) since May of this year. I have tried so many solutions. Nothing has helped! I haven't contacted 'Overclockers' though, and it might be time to tell them my problem!

I'm hoping that you guys will come forward with all the solutions that you have tried or just what you heard and I'll go from there. Also, if anyone has any evidence of what causes this problem please share your findings!

Thanks in advance for your replies

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

I have had a lot of problems with the GSOD but was completely fixed by a new BIOS from my very good friends at XFX support. The problem relates to the VRAM memory timings apparently.

So, if I was to buy new RAM, with a different set of timings, would that help at all??

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

No. This is Video Ram. the chips soldered into the card.
You need to contact customer services for the make of card concerned, and either get instructions on flashing the BIOS to a newer version, or ask for your money back.

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

Something bad has happened! I contacted my seller and told them about the problem, so they agreed to RMA the graphics card. I bought a cheap gpu for the meantime ( ASUS ENGT220 GeForce GT 220). When I installed the drivers for the new gpu, about 30 minutes into using my computer with this new gpu, I experienced a black screen. The windows screen came back on with an error balloon message in the bottom right hand corner. I went to the action centre and it shows that there was a video hardware error. I then went to the nvidia webpage and installed the latest drivers. The problem hasn't happened since.

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

Just a driver issue. You need to be sure that you completely remove all of the old driver set before updating. This is especially true when moving between NV and ATi. Glad to hear all working Ok now.

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

OK, 'overclockers' came back to me with my card. They tested it and said:

The product GX-227-SP on RMA193921 has been returned to you, this will be sent on a new order with order number 3715974.

Here is the technicians Test Report:

"Graphics card passes all Tests with no issues, Tests Run: Crysis WarHead, Furmark, 3Dmark Vantage, AVP, Lost Planet 2, Stone Benchmark MSI Kombuster, Resident Evil Benchmark, ATI Mecha, ATI Ladybug, "

(Graphics card passes all Tests with no issues, Tests Run: Crysis WarHead, Furmark, 3Dmark Vantage, AVP, Lost Planet 2, Stone Benchmark MSI Kombuster, Resident Evil Benchmark, ATI Mecha, ATI Ladybug, Streetfighter Benchmark and heaven benchmark tool, these were all tested at 1920 x 1200 resolution running maximum settings, tested on DX9, DX10 and DX11 where applicable, there was no issues apparent.)

I am still in contact with sapphire, but I'm not so sure now what to do. Quite Depressing!

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

Stick at it with both OCUK and Sapphire. Ask about a BIOS flash.
Take pics of the grey crash on your screen. There are some links to youtube videos in the threads I linked to above to show how the problem can be replicated. Remember, if they are saying that you don't have a problem, you need to prove that you do. Keep trying, don't give up, email pics of the crash each and every time.
Essentially badger them into it. Bury them with evidence.

Re: ATI 5830 Grey Screen of death

    Ok, just a quick update.

1.) I flashed my motherboard bios to the latest version. That didnt work.
2.) I reinstalled windows again. I have not installed many programs because I wanted to see if it happens with just windows update. I haven't even installed any ATI drivers for my gpu (however, when the computer booted for the first time after reinstalling windows, windows itself installed something for the gpu, that found new hardware thing came up with a green tick). Now I was on youtube, the sound of my hardrive started making noise, as if I was running some sort of virus scan. Then my screen went black for a couple of seconds then windows recovered. I got the following error message from action centre:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Description
A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

    Service Pack: 0_0

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What the hell is the problem? Before, when I had the ATI drivers, the screen would normally go grey with vertical lines. Sometimes it would go black, but with back light from the monitor.

I have tried RMA'ing my gpu twice, with no luck. Updated my bios and chipset drivers. I v checked my RAM with MemTest and WinDiag with no errors.

I have contacted Sapphire Tech for some advice. They have told me to contact gigabyte, however, as its christmas, gigabyte won't reply to my ticket till 4th of Jan.

[ERIK_A 6/12/2011 3:35:51 PM] Hi Matt, There is no BIOS update for this model card. For the problem, how long have you had this video card and how long has this been happening to you? Is it possible to test this unit into another system and see if the problem follows the card? Do you ever get any error messages or graphical issues beyond a grey screen?- Erik

Got a reply from XfX, sounds like this guy is new... I'm not sure I can get this card RMA'd had it a year. Plus I don't want another 5XXX series. Told him to google 5830 Grey Screen.
