My ipod clicks, it's a 4th gen click wheel ipod, recently bought second hand. When I add songs to the ipod or when I listen to some music/podcasts the ipod makes a clicking sound. Does this mean it's about to die? :/

Hmm, it does suggest that the HD might be on the way out. Do you have an original reciept so you can see if it's in date?
If not, check the Apple webpage. Putting in the serial number should tell you if it's still covered for a free repair.
Defionately sounds like a hard drive issue. The click, whirr, click usually occurs when the HD is dead.
I buy and sell ipods all the time, Ive got about 8 in my living room at the mo.
Plug the ipod into your pc, right click on it, click properties and run an error check on it. You could also try putting your ipod into diagnostic mode for an indepth HD check.

PM me if you need any help.
Ok, so I tryed a scan disk, but the ipod doesn't seem to stay on my computer long enough to even really initiate a scan disk, so I'm currently running a HDD scan. I'll let you know how it goes. My biggest worry is that I have only just bought the ipod (recived it on Tuesday morning) second hand, so I don't have the recipet :/
scan resulted in
112
RD FAIL
SCAN NG
://
RD Fail stands for Read Fail and Scan NG stands for Scan No Good.
Theres a few things to try now.
- Firstly, back up everything you've got on the ipod. Use ephpod to backup music as itunes doesnt allow it.
- Format the ipod using windows (right click the drive in my computer and click format - ensure its FAT32)
- Restore the ipod via itunes, this will wipe it and reinstall the latest firmware
- Run the HDD diagnostics again
This problem can occur because of a bad USB cable transferring corrupt data, so try a different cable if the above fails too.
Also, what do you mean when you say "the ipod doesn't seem to stay on my computer long enough to even really initiate a scan disk"? Are you saying it disconnects consantly?
If I were you I would make contact with the seller and query it with them. It may have been sold to you faulty or it may have been damaged in the post. Was it well packaged when it arrived?

Enter your serial number, check your cover
If the ipod is clicking it could mean either of two things here, Firmware damage or Head damage.
If it is the latter, then every click means more damage on the platters, which in turn causes more damage on the head. This clicking is known as "the click of the death" please see http://www.unirecovery.co.uk/disk.php .
If the damage is a firmware damage, then you are advised to address this issue asap.
In both cases, switch off the ipod to avoid permenant loss of data.
I would advise you to replace the drive with a new drive, perhaps Hitachi. If you feel you can't, you can take it to any IT shop for help.

Well it's a 4th gen and pretty beat up, so I presume it's more than a year old. (I went on the website and entered my serial code but I had to register for various things so never went through with it)
The ipod will appear in my computer but it disappears not long after I see it, or it doesn't appear at all.
I shall contact the seller and see how co operative he is goign to be about it.
Right, it's now giving me a unhappy face and a link to the ipod support page. I've tried going into diagnostic mode and it supply doesn't, instead it just restarts back to the apple icon. I feel it may be completely dead.

i'f its those big fat ipods i think you can buy a replacement 1.8" hard drive for it. although you'll need to open it and install it yourself. but thats a last resort, if apple will fix it then let them fix it
Hmm, and how much would it cost for one of those? Also how hard would it be?
found it.

seems the 1.8" hard drives cost about £60 - 70 in uk. its really up to you if you want to try this. if you can get a new one for £70 then dont bother I guess.
Well I bought the ipod for £30 from the trading section, so I would probably look towards another option. I have contacted the seller however so I'll see what he says, hopefully we can come to a agreement.

I've pm'ed the seller and the ipod was 5 years old, so no chance of getting it fixed under warranty. Needless to say I'm rather annoyed I've been sent a ipod that was on the brink of breaking.
