    Apple's 'physical damage' claims ...

Well Ive had my macbook for about 8 months now, and its been back to Apple three times now ...

I had to take it in this friday as a CD managed to get stuck in the drive and wouldn't eject - just before I took it in I actually managed to get the CD out, but only with slight force.

So I took it into the store and they said it should be fine and they'll fix it, got a call yesterday saying that there is physical damage to the metal sheild in the bottom case, a piece of metal that is that can only be accessed from the inside of the machine ... so surely either someone whos been inside the machine has done this (an Apple Genius), or it would have cracked the outside plastic case. This means as its physical damage its not covered under the warentee and so they want to charge me £70 labour + parts to fix it!!!

Anyone else had this problem, know anything about it? I'm getting less and less happy with Apple atm.

If its 8 months old say to them its not fit for purpose (having had to be repaired so many times) and that you want a full refund.

Then go spend your money on something else

Im sure they only legally have to give you a refund in the first 16 days of purchase?

well malicious or heavy handed treatment cant be included in manufacturers warrenty - otherwise this would cost them a fortune - people could trash their stuff and expect manufacturers to repair it.

if you are adamant that this damage could only have been caused by an apple technician then tell them this - ask to speak to management, send letters of complaint etc.

If you had three 'hardware' repairs previously this should of triggered a reasonably no quibble replacement. I am not sure if this is official policy - but i have personal experience of this, and know anecdotally of several more.

Document your entire experience and present that at your next visit, though I think you might get more joy out of AppleCare on the phone. Call your local store and have them transfer you to Applecare - then it will only cost a local phone call.
