Mac Mini DVD Player
Hi All,
I'm trying to repair a mac mini for a friend & I need to reload OS X unfortunately the slot loading DVD player is knackered so I need to replace that first.
Does anybody know of a suitable slot loading drive that the mac will recognise. Don't want to pay Apple's prices as that would be uneconomic but I think it will only recognise cerrtain drives.
Alternatively if anybody knows of another way to reload the os without a dvd drive please let me know.

You could purchase an external USB/Firewire DVD drive, and hold down Cmd+Option+Shift+Del while booting to boot from the external device.
If you have an extra Mac, you can hook the two up using a Firewire cable and hold down T during boot up on your damaged Mac to have it mount as an external Firewire device on your working Mac, and then use your working Mac to install OS X on the damaged Mac.

now there's a clever thing!

Borrowed an external dvd writer from a mate, that was a no go as the mac mini didn't detect it. Will try the mac book & firewire cable route tonight.
Is it easy to mount the macbook's drive? Being a nix noob I have no idea how to do it from the commandline.

Yeah, some external USB devices don't work when booting, but Firewire do.
Just connect the two machines and hold down T on the damaged one when starting it up.
