Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

I have had a PC for years now and have enjoyed building them and tinkering with them but lately they just annoy me. Vista is crap and crashes alot which really bugs me. I have also noticed that games do not interest me so much anymore, plus I now have a PS3 for gaming. All I need to know is will a Mac do certain things I need.

    Download torrents
    Play divx files
Stream to my PS3 (not for long as it will have divx soon)
Be easy to use for my wife (she cannot seem to work out Windows at all)
    Not crash

    Sounds ideal for your requirements

Plus, if you find yourself *really* needing an windows application or two, there's always parallels desktop or vmware fusion, which are both excellent, and have limited capability for some games too

Now the question is, which one would you want?

Oh, if you want to have a play on a few, then there's an excellent mac shop in yaletown

Cant go wrong with a Mac mate ... and if you cant get on with it to well you can always use Bootcamp to go back to XP or the like and just have a much nicer looking PC!

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

I am going to the Mac shop in Yaletown on Saturday, handily I live in Yaletown myself, so its only a couple of blocks. Having never used a Mac before I really need to have a good play with one before buying one. If I do buy one then I need to sell my current PC and will probably split it up as its going to be worth more that way. Would you guys go for a Mac Mini or iMac for my needs?

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

One point to remember that the Mac Mini is technically a sealed unit. So if you want a certain amount of ram (which OS X does benefit from). Get it added to the initial build. My mates 24" iMac however was easy to upgrade, he saved a wee bit by doing that himself.

Make sure you get a Super/DVDRW Drive not a combo as well. Both can be easily upgraded with external storage. I would guess it's down to whether 20"+ is overkill for you and your wife.

I must say the new models of iMac are very nice. My mate bought one recently and got both Tiger and Leopard. This is good as he wants to wait for tiger to bed in a bit first. If you do go for external storage be careful what firewire drives you go for, his WD drive did not play nice with the iMac.

i would reccomend the iMac over the Mac Mini... a wee tad more pricey maybe, but honestly i think it is better...

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

I moved to mac in OCT 06 and it's been brilliant. I been able to do so much more with ease since moving to OSX. I've been able to create websites in Rapid Weaver, which i would never have been able to do with such simplicity in Windows. We also went on football tour and i put together pics and video into a DVD film using iMovie and iDvd, again very east to use.

I also found my self gaming on the 360 even more, but i play Flight Sim X so i had to buy the Mac Pro with the X1900 card. If i was you i would go with the iMac , it's a great all-rounder and at competitive price.

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

I see that you can also run Linux on your Mac too.
If there was ever a game that tempted me on the PC side I guess a iMac will run it if I get a pretty decent one, although its not likely there will be one plus the PS3 looks great.

Running bootcamp gives you the best of both worlds so there isn't really any downside to go for a mac these days. I've got rid of my pc for a macbook pro and I've not regretted it for a second.

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

Macs aren't immune to crashes- I've had my Macbook lock up a few times in the past, and I find that Firefox gets unstable if I leave it open for more than a few days.
In my experience, it's no better or worse than XP in terms of stability.

I think it'll serve your needs well nevertheless.

I can remember one crash on my macbook pro. My windows machine would crash maybe 2 times a week. Firefox on the mac is far too buggy for my liking on some macs not all. Mine is fine, but my girlfriends mini has loads of firefox crashes its odd.

Re: Seriously considering binning my PC for a Mac

I've always been a PC user but I have two brothers who recently acquired laptops. One a Dell Vostro and the other a macbook. I guess my question is, why does the Macbook cost so much more? I'm assuming it's because of the endless companies able to make PCs while Apple has a lock on the market.

But is it really worth the extra cost?
