    Ipod Touch. Any views?

I was in the Apple Store the other day and had a good play around on the Touch.
    I was quite impressed.
    Anyone got one?
I know the memory is small but if it's used on a wireless network at home I guess it doesn't matter much as so much material is online anyway.
I felt it could do with a few more applications, mail etc. Could Apple add these at a lter date and the unit be updated by updates?
    Any views?

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

A friend of mine bought one to play around with.

He's decided it's a good use of technology and the software is slick, but it isn't "good" software.

He already has an iPod nano and a Nokia N95. I'll see if he has taken the iPod touch with him up here for christmas or if it lying turned off back in London.

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

My brother has one and when I see the price I think its stupid. But when I had a go I did think it was actually very cool. Great for movies, although limited memory is annoying. It would have been nice for have a slot for a xD or SD card etc.. not that it would improve it vastly but every little helps

The net is suprisingly easy to use on it.

Overall I really like it but I would never pay the sort of money they want for it.

It is quite big but then it is very thin so it's easy to slip into a pocket without really knowing it's there.

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

Work's buying me one in the New Year so I'll report back. From what I've seen though it's pretty much the same as the iPhone, only without some of the apps. I used one to help run a live music show a few weeks back and it didn't crash, stutter etc - so far so good.

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

In typical Apple fashion the UI on the Touch is superb but it's too expensive.

If I were in the market for a new MP3 player then I'd consider a 160Gb iPod classic (which is cheaper than a 16Gb Touch) but not until I could get Rockbox running on it so that I could get away from not being able to drag and drop music directly to the disc and also be able to play FLAC and OGG files.

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

I'd buy one but it has low storage for the price and flash price drops so quickly that i'd kick myself in a years time for buying a non upgradeable player. Apple on the other hand must be happy in the thought that people will need to buy entire new players in a year or two.
I wouldn't like to have to use iTunes either.

If it wasn't for those two things I would definitely buy one.

I'm looking at creative as their players have SD card slots.

Oh and the touch don't use mini-USB either :/

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

To expensive for what it is. £235 for 16GB of memory? Thats not enough for videos IMO. I'd wait till the next gen of touches come out. Probably fixed any bugs in this version, and more memory.

Archos seem to make the best alternative. They have wi-fi models but I havn't read much about them. They won't be as thin but they come in 30GB+ models.

Well it turns out my friend loves his touch and his N95 and iPod nano dn't get a look in for music any more. He also uses the web browser a lot on any wireless he can get access to.

I bought one. Before it came out i was anti iPod... But it actually kicks ass.

    I wouldn't have bought one if it weren't for this though;
    YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

There is ALOT of stuff out for it... and more coming.

    Re: Ipod Touch. Any views?

I got one just after it came out and it is a good general device but there are some issues which do really bug me about it. Firstly to get the same apps as the iphone you need to pay £13 if you were an earlier adopter, this won't be a problem if you buy one today. Also out of the box the touch doesn't really make full use out of the hardware it will be interesting to see what 3rd party apps come along after feburary.

The alternative was the Archos 605 which is a very good device but to handle all of the same codecs as the ipod you need to pay for some extra plugins. That said it supports divx and xvid if you already have videos in that format. The price for a 160GB one is actually the same as the 16Gb touch which demonstrates how much you are paying for the smaller form factor.

I got the iPhone apps for free... as well as a load of other awesome 3rd party ones. (check my post above)
