    Faster HD for Mac Pro

Got my mac pro set up just how I like it for Logic.
    But,
With in the first 20 minutes I got a "Disk to slow" error message! Pretty annoying.
I can't afford the RAID card for the Mac Pro its stupidly priced.

Only thing I can think of is getting a WD Raptor, but some people say they are really loud and some people say they are as quiet as most HD's so I am a bit confused by this. Plus they are only SATA I. Not that it makes any difference?
I really don't want a noisy hard drive as I love the fact I can leave my mac pro on all night and I can't hear it while I sleep, I like my sleep and I don't want to ruin it

The other issue is, I really don't want to re-install everything again, so can I use something like CCC to clone my current HD onto a new one?

Hang on a tick - how many tracks are you running? What sort of sample/bit rates?

Put it this way - on a Dual Core 2.7 G5, I can run well over 44 tracks of audio at 44.1/16bit without so much as hiccup with CB4! You shouldn't be seeing any kind of problems with the standard 7200rpm drive.

Is this a pretty fresh install? If so... Spotlight might still be busy indexing things and eating up your disk performance. Check the magnifying glass in the top right... if it has a pulsing dot in it, it's indexing.

Re: Faster HD for Mac Pro

session I was working on was around the 90 tracks mark.
    only 44.1khz, 24bit. Normally I record 96khz or above.

I was working with a client, we where re-doing vocal tracks and I was running Logic with the I/O buffer size at 64 samples to reduce latency for monitoring.

I ended up having to up it to 128 samples and then the latency starts to become apparent.

90 tracks - not surprised. Sounds about right really, esp at 24 bit.

    As for 96khz, "o v e r k i l l"

Just to get things running, bounce down the tracks to something more manageable to run at the latency you want to run at. Record the parts, export them and then import them to the original unbounced track. Set latency to something that works, mixdown.

Yea I was kinda hoping I could avoid doing that. If all it takes is a faster disk then I kind of think that would be an easier option.

96khz is not overkill when your having tracks mastered at an analogue studio, helps preserve the high frequencies and harmonics that analogue mastering brings out even though its going to be mastered down to 44.1/16bit.
It all depends who your working for. I am not doing a big production at the moment so 44.1khz will do.
