    old iMac & the internet...

Hi...this is my first post so please bear with me...
I have a MacBook (OS 10.4.10) connected to broadband via a D-Link DSL-G6242 router (ethernet cable). I also have an old iMac (G3) running OS8.6 and would like (if possible) to get online with that. So...if I run an ethernet cable to a spare port on the router...what should my settings be on the TCP control panel on the iMac?

Connect via Ethernet? Using DHCP ? I'm sure it's possible even tho the internet speed would not be as good as the MacBook...

    Any advice welcomed...

Re: old iMac & the internet...

I have no idea how to do that with mac os 8.6 but i'd seriously recommend doing what i did a year ago with a g3 i acquired - upgrade the os to 10.2 or 10.3.
Then you can use modern stuff like firefox etc.

Do you know how much RAM (memory) it has?
Are you able to get your hands on a spare OS X 10.2/3 ?

Re: old iMac & the internet...

Thanks for that... I don't know how much RAM it has I'm afraid and unlikely to be able to get OS X. It's not a major problem - I can still get online using ye olde dial-up but was just curious if I could add a bit of oomph to it by plugging into the router - just one of those Mac questions that was bugging me !

    Many thanks again.

i see no reason why you could not get it online using it's Ethernet and dhcp. i know os 8.6 has a proper dhcp client and should be enabled when you plug the ethernet cable in

Re: old iMac & the internet...

Well the iMac G3's takes 128MB DIMMS, there are 2 slots and 256MB will run the older OSX's alright. Open up the flap at the back and take a look.
If you need another, they are about a fiver (search for 128MB PC100 SDRAM, sometimes called 168 pin).

OSX 10.3.4 is for sale here on ebay and will probably go for £10 - £15, there will be plenty of others all the time that will go for a similar amount.

I can certainly understand not wanting to spend money on an old computer and it's less hassle to go with what you know, but in my view those old G3s are a piece of art and a bit of cash can make it run in a modern world.

Re: old iMac & the internet...

I plugged the ethernet cable into the iMac and then the router - and lo and behold it worked. Haven't run a speed test to see how that is doing but it is significantly faster than dial-up.
Many thanks to all who took the trouble to reply....
