New Macbooks, Macbook Pro's, Macbook Airs and Cinema Displays

yesterday since i was near by i thought i would see if pc world ugh=( had the new macs yet.
they didnt but i did notice that the old macs cost as folllows.
standard macbook £699 which is the same price at apple store before new macs.
standard macbook pro £1300 same price as apple store before new macs.

now the new standard macbook is £719 on the apple uk website. wait a minute in the US the old mac went down $50 yet in the uk it went up by £20? old stock going up in price is unacceptable.

the new macbook pro is £1400
has the macbook pro in the us gone up by £100?

Also - WTF is with the lack of FireWire I use my MBs FireWire port daily (audio interface) - and to simply remove it is such a joke! I'm not spending the extra on a MBP (and can't, LOL) ... think my current MB will just get a new HDD rather than upgrade just yet.

MBP only has Firewire 800 as well. Not a good move for Apple that.

I'm also disappointed with the lack of display adapters. You always got an adapter with a MBP to convert from whatever port they fancied this week to VGA. Not any more, it's a paid for option now...

The dongles used to be £15, but they've gone up to £20 now

FW800 is directly convertable to FW400 which isn't *so* bad. The previous MBPs simply daisy chained the 400 port from the 800s ... also if you have a FW800 HDD you can just daisychain 400 devices off that.

£20?!?!?! I have a mini-DVI to VGA, to DVI and to SVideo/composite connector so I am covered (I do quite a lot of VJ stuff when touring and don't always know what Im gonna get presented with) ... that cost me £45 on its own - if I was to change now that'd be another £60 just for all that. I also notice that the Apple remote isn't included anymore

I hear there may be an option of an ethernet to firewire convertor in the not too distant future according to an Apple Genius friend of mine Although its yet another dongle I have to carry around with me

Firewire 800 and 400 are completely cross compatible. Like USB 1.0 and 2.0 however they require a slightly different cable. I had to get one a while back and it cost a couple of quid.

The LED displays are just the back light it's still pretty much the same technology as other lcd's. This is the first LED display I've seen that is sensibly priced. Don't get me wrong it's still very pricey for a 24in lcd, but at least it's now worth some of that extra.

I can see where they are coming from though. I've got an adapter in the boxes of the five different mac's I've owned. I've never used a single one of the adapters they just stay in the box. How many people have used them. I expect apple looked at how often they were used, for how many people it would be a deal breaker and took the simple money saving option.

The remotes were stripped in the previous revision of the macbook pro's .

Ethernet to firewire is already out there I believe

I was waiting eagerly for the 17" MBP for 3 months for Apple to redesign and change the specs. AND they just increased the RAM and HDD...oh boy.
Now...rumors had it...it won't be upgraded until next year...I mean omfg...Should I wait??

It is sure to be updated soon. I wouldn't buy one unless you absolutely had to get one right now. I then would suggest the refurbished ones.

I doubt apple would make one as it would be admitting that they made a mistake leaving firewire out. I'm sure someone like griffin will make one.

I don't know how many other people this will benefit, but I've just saved a colleague 80 quid because the company I work for uses "motivano" (http://www.motivano.co.uk) as part of our benefits package. well, I got a previous rev. MBP 15" for mucho discount and its ideal. checked out the hi-gloss screens on the new ones whilst I was in the shop. pants. no good for photo work though I could see my hair was a bit ruffled after being blown about in the wind so its a great mirror then!

I popped into the new Apple store in Bristol to have a play. They had the new macbook pro's, macbook's and even one of the new cinema displays in.

It was nice to have a play with one in person. They are stunning in the flesh and are sorely tempting me into upgrading! Grrrr

buying a cheap cost-reduced item ?

One of the biggest draw backs for me is that they dont have S-Video, composite or component out. I do live visuals which occationally requires the use of simple vision mixing and there isnt many that can handle hdmi, dvi or VGA, especially not for my budget. The macbooks are a complete write off for anyone in my line of work until they sort this out.
