I think the point is that companies need to look more at safe disposal of there products.

It's not that hard to remove a battery at the end of it's life..

and to be quite honest, how many people can actually be bothered to send their old consumer goods back to be recycled?

This isn't really down to Apple.

Companies won't do it unless there's:

    a) Consumer pressure to do so
    b) Government directives to do so

Like the page says, Apple already run recycling programmes in Japan and Europe (Where there is a different consumer attitude, and numerous governmental directives.).

where did the hefty fee from apple for a replacement battery come from, i had to get mine done and it cost £18, which aint bad considering the horror stories of 100 quid and the like for batteries, Apple listened and dropped the price of their batteries.

That's kinda lame, that site I mean....I've never thrown any hardware away, alway seem to find someone willing to buy it...

My iPod, 4g 40gig might be the first piece to ever find it self in the trash as I will be using it for quite some time and the only thing that'll keep me from using it is either low capacity, hdd dying ...but not the battery.
