    Spyware & Viruses

My friend have bought a G4 laptop. Nice bit of kit, but she is not that computer savvy. So I am doing some research on mac's so I can help her out

Ok, what is the current Virus and Spyware situation? Is it a big threat? What software is available? Could someone please give me the lowdown, cheers

Yup, .mac membership allows free use of "Virex" along with other stuff like backup tools etc.

tbh, I wouldn't worry that much.... as long as she doesn't install goodness knows what etc.

There is pretty much nowt on either front, no point getting worried about them. The Virus software isn't worth the money IMHO, scaremongering really.

The MacWorld review of .Mac said that Virex is basically a waste of money - and definitely not a reason to get .Mac. There aren't {many, any} virii out there for OS X, so it's no a problem on that front.

I'm not worried much about a virus, but for example...when I come to the Hexus Forums I have to use Safari. If I use Internet Explorer I get pop-ups and error messages saying I don't have a plug-in necessary to view a page. It asks me if I want to view the page. If I click yes it goes to some BS internet search website. So even though I have been using IE for only 20 minutes I have already been infected by a parasite.

Anybody know how to get rid of it?

    Here is the site: http://search.internet.com/

    F^#%@*&^%@#^%K!!!!

    UNBELIEVABLE!!!

DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT run Microsoft software on your Mac unless you want it to be as virus and parasite ridden as a PC!!! S%^#^&%$*@(!T

    UPDATE:

The problem was not a parasite apparently. The problem was with the protocol "octet-stream" being handled by the application "Stuffit Expander". I simply unchecked the "use current application if possible" option box and no more message.

    UPDATE 2:

Spoke too soon. It's back. Anybody know what's going on here? It only happens when I use the IE browser to go to the Hexus Forums.

Why the hell are you using IE? And why download it onto a Mac???????

Stick with Safari or download Firefox.

Exactly right Stoo. I didn't download anything.

Some websites prefer IE (like Hotmail for instance) which is the only site I will use IE on from now on. Safari is better for the most part but some sites don't work properly on Safari. Hexus is not one of them though.

So nobody knows about the problem with octet-stream and Stuffit Expander when using IE on a Mac? Bummer...I hate not knowing stuff!
