The Big Debate: Mac OS X VS Mac OS 9

Well, Mac OS X has really taken hold now, with many X only apps, and the final big app, Quark, finally available. So what are everyones view on the matter?

Do you want to stick with an operating system that hasnt changed fundamentally since OS 1? Or do you love the slick new UNIX based OS X? Or are you inbetween. Do you wish OS X had some features like the old control panels of 9, or the similar looks? Vote Now!

Os X Only for me.
But thats simply because thats the only Mac OS I know.
I've never used 9 or below, simply not needed to.

OS9 only, because it had the longest option in the vote and I don't have a Mac.

Mac OS X, because you can compile lots of Unix utils and get some proper work done, plus the design and look of the OS is absolutely stunning - nothing remotely close (for actual usage rather than just screenies) for Windows.

mac 0S 9 on a 4400/200 . as that's all i've got. i think if i had the hardware to run os X, then i definitely would, as os9 doesn't impress me too much, it seems a lot like the mac version of win98 in some ways... memory management / "multi" tasking etc...

tbh theres always things u dont like about new OS's but the fact is u kinda have to upgrade anyway in the end cos it all just gets phased out.

Ive only used OS X for less than 5 hrs total but i rather like it so far. It seems quite polished.

X. Just wish it wasn't so bloated/slow at simple OS actions like window opening. Thats G3/700, 384Mb iBook. Quartz extreme running.

Apple are just about correcting the deficiencies (finally, in panther) that made macos 9's desktop fast and useful. Unfortunately the speed requirements of aqua make good machines look rubbish. But all the unix goodies that you can run securely and without crashing mean I can't live another day without some form of unix.. I'd forgotten how cludgy configuring the internet on os 9 macs was until the other day.. If you've never used os9 location manager you are very lucky.

OS9 and I hate it stupid piddly beige G3

I want my 17" iMac back but the company flogged it as they do with everything.

OS X is simply leagues ahead of this clunky system, can't wit for panther as well

I used to use 9 (well I think I was that or 8.6 ) back in the days of High School. The non-stop bickering at its flimsy layout and the occasional "Why's the 'Start menu' at the top?" always filled the classroom

After looking at OSX though, seems to be a bit nicer to work with, even if initially its just the 'oo thats pretty' factor


The new G5's look very appealing, it's a shame that most will have to re-mortgage their house to buy one

I have spent the last yr using OS 9 and now college have upgraded to OS X very nice
