I don't get why anyone buys BMWs. I can buy a Caterham 7 cheaper and it's faster and more fuel efficient.

Once upon a time before I had that great advantage known as "money", I tried repairing my iPod Nano 4th gen. The slim, tall one.
Long story short, the buttons were ruined and attempting to spin it to scroll was basically a masochistic affair, the replacement ring button thing was a fiver or around that. Getting into it at all wasn't easy, replacing the buttons proved to be quite simple, but the fix was totally pointless and within no time at all the buttons were screwed again.
Later on, having already gotten into it once, I had a go at trying to take the entire thing apart. The rest (top end) of the components were so tightly fit together than it was practically impossible to do without damaging it. I currently own a bag of bits including a dented battery and a screen scratched from the inside.
Would not try again.
Thats true, but if the question had been "I really don't get why people buy microsoft products." and you replied
It would be equally true. From my experience it's down to people liking the looks and feel of their products and/or preferring the UI design. Another set of users think Apple is unreliable and crap and fiddly to use and another set don't like Apple as a company. There were also cases of certain Windows OS specific programmes people thought were better than the Apple equivalents and certain cases where the software would run better on Windows.
I'm just glad there is a choice to use whatever works for individuals and neither company has a monopoly.

Misguided
Misinformed
Style over substance
Because its more expensive
Because they want how they use their device to be dictated to them
Because having choice is too stressful
iTunes
Sucked into an Ecosystem even though there is no need to be
Take your pick. I've never understood Mac purchasers at all.

How about....
Because they want a POSIX compliant OS with things like SSH built in, which will run things like Ansible natively, but which will also run MS Office. Not everyone only uses their computing kit for games. Just because it's not fit for your purpose, doesn't mean it's not fit for anyone's purpose.
Quite frankly having 3 small kids I want a locked down ecosystem.

I assume, to go with this, they'll be ordering a Tall Iced Triple Ristretto Venti ½ and ½, Grande quad, Non-Fat Decaf Chai, Cinnamon Dolce Soy double-cappu-frappu-chino-Latte Mocha-Macchiato, no foam, Extra Shot and Cream, no foam, Half Sweet Sugar-Free Skinny Hazelnut Vanilla Caramel Drizzle upside down, lite water, no foam, Extra Hot... with Chocolate Sauce?
Even without kids, I'd probably need whatever the heck that order actually is!!

I still don't see what the 'fundamental design fault' is. Unless in your opinion it doesn't work for you. In which case buy something else.
I am not arguing that Apple gear is the best in every, or even any scenario. That would be silly. It is equally silly to suggest that your XBox, PS4, Wintel, Lintel, Cray, Samsung Phone..... is the best for every person in every scenario.
To be honest it's a bit of a boring and repetitive debate.
The difference between all those other companies is that none of them blamed the consumer for faults with the product. Apple has just had sooo many scandals and has such an anti consumer attitude that people shouldn't be tolerating it anymore. Their stuff costs sooo much more than alternative solutions but have a vastly reduced life span.
I think that was supposed to be a cup of tea...
But either way, Apple are the stereotypical brand of choice for stereotypical hipsters upon which to write their stereotypical novels while in stereotypical coffee shops that serve such beverages, just to be seen doing all <-this...
I think people have more of a problem with the Apple mentality behind these things.
This. I have no real issue with Apple hardware - the few iphones and ipad I've owned worked ok. Nor, do I care about flamebait stereotypes.
It was itunes and better value hardware elsewhere (but mainly itunes) that drove me into the arms of Android. I haven't looked back, and I don't ever intend to.
OK - I'll bite...
Because they don't want to be locked into the cycle of paid for updates
Because the user experience/GUI is the same with the free OS releases - no need to learn new ways of working
Because they don't want to be at the whim of individual mfrs updating operating systems on devices
Because the don't want bloatware on their devices
Because they want something where the applications work out of the box and they don't have to faff about finding better ones (although they are there if required)
Because tinkering with a device to get it to work as they want is a stressful waste of time.
Because they want to break away from the perceived mainstream
Because OSX comes with a whole raft of useful apps built in to the command line interface
Because there is no complex registry to negotiate or hack to enable/disable features.
Because one mfr integrates hardware and software seamlessly.
Because they dont have to pay extra for different editions of software with different features.
Because different people have different needs, and a monopoly by one provider would be extremely bad for consumers!
(Did I mention Because they have had enough problems with aria Lee driver reliability on different video card implementations)
